From car equipment to your home and what to wear, here’s what you need to see you through the coldest month of the year

Car

Car cover – €33.60

Pic: Halfords

If you’ve ever slept through your alarm on a cold winter’s morning only to realise that your car has totally frozen over, you’ll understand the necessity of having a car cover. This will protect it from frost (as well as dirt, rain, tree sap, etc) ensuring you can whip it off and get going as soon as you leave the front door. Make sure you measure your car before purchasing so you know exactly what size you need to cover it.

Windscreen cover – €7.99

If a car cover feels like too much, you can get this cover that will protect your windscreen and wipers against snow, ice, dirt and UV radiation all year round. It’s also very easy to install with secure side tabs.

Ice-scraper – €4.99

Don’t pour hot or boiling water over the ice on your windscreen! This scraper will do the job safely and has a fleece-lined mitten to protect your hand against the cold while you de-ice your car.

Screenwash with de-icer/antifreeze – €8.95

Screenwash is something you don’t think about until you actually need it. This ready-to-use screenwash with de-icer removes frost and light ice for maximum visibility. It promises to remove traffic dirt and salt, working as low as -10°C. Let’s hope things don’t get that frosty.

Clothing

Sittingsuit – €136.95

Occupying the space somewhere between a sleeping bag and an overcoat, a Sittingsuit is the sustainable extra layer you have been missing. Designed to be worn over your outdoor gear, depending on the season, it’s both wind proof and water repellent. It covers your legs down to your ankles and has practical side openings so you can access pockets and bags underneath.

Touchscreen gloves – €13

There’s nothing more annoying than not answering a call in time because you were removing your gloves. Or maybe you just want to pause a podcast you were listening to. Whatever the reason, these touchscreen gloves allow you to use your devices while keeping your hands warm.

Crampons/Stud Grips – €5 (sale price)

If you have to be up and out early each day and you’re worried that you or an older relative might slip on the frosty ground, ice stud grips are a great call. They provide a quick and easy traction for icy conditions with six studs carefully positioned to ensure stability and grip.

Home accessories

Draught excluder – €18.50

Banish any pesky gusts of cold air entering the room with this stylish and practical draught excluder. It’s also handy for keeping heat inside the room and reducing any extra noise from outside!

Candles – From £12

Don’t underestimate how much heat can be generated from candles and wax melts! Not only will they cast a wonderful glow and create a cosy atmosphere, placing one or two on a table in front or beside you can definitely help to keep you warm.

Wool blanket – €169

You can’t beat a beautifully made wool blanket that will add sophistication and elegance to your decor while keeping you snug. This throw is expertly crafted in Co Mayo using a warm blend of cashmere and lambswool for the highest quality finish.

Electric-heated footwarmer – €39.99

Pic: Homestore and More

Are your feet always cold, despite warm socks and slippers? This electric footwarmer has a simple and easy-to-use remote control with four heat settings allowing total control over the warmth of your feet. The detachable controller lets you manage the temperature, and can then be removed when the foot warmer lining needs washing. If that feels a bit full-on for you, try out this foot-warming hot water bottle instead.
