Pet owners are being urged to take extra precautions at this time to help their animals avoid injury or illness
We all love watching cute videos online of dogs and cats being funny, silly, smart or adorable with their family members.
However, it’s so important to remember that a pet is a massive responsibility and they can become sick or injured at any time, just like us.
Unfortunately, the added expense of pet insurance is something many pet owners avoid until it is too late. Allianz Ireland recently collected data that revealed that more than a fifth (21.5%) of pet insurance claims in Ireland exceed €750, with 15% surpassing €1,000.
Tapping into the insight that many pet owners who don’t have pet insurance turn to crowdfunding to cover life-saving veterinary care, The Allianz Pet Project was created to highlight the relief felt by pet owners who have insurance when their pets require urgent medical care.
Further data from the campaign identified April as the peak month for pet-related claims, making it the most hazardous time of the year for Ireland’s beloved companions.
Commenting on this finding, Dr Fionnuala Fallon, veterinarian at Park Pets Veterinary Clinic, says: “April typically is when we see a significant change in the weather. While seasonal changes bring plenty of outdoor activities and quality time with our pets, they also present some unique hazards that pet owners need to be aware and mindful of.”
Here’s what she suggests pet owners need to watch out for over the coming weeks:
Pesky parasites
Pet owners need to be on high alert for an increase in bugs like bees, ticks, and fleas, which can cause pets discomfort and transmit multiple diseases.
Easter
Many people celebrate Easter in April with chocolates and flowers – both of which can be dangerous for animals. Lilies are toxic and can be fatal to certain animals like cats, and chocolate ingestion can cause vomiting and even seizures.
Plant protection
Pet owners should be wary of all plants with stings, thorns or sharp edges and exercise extreme caution when exploring unfamiliar areas with their pets in spring.
Outdoor hazards
As people spend more time outdoors in April, pets may be more likely to encounter dangers like traffic or aggressive animals off-lead.
Allergies
April and May mean an increase in pollen, mould, and other allergens that can cause respiratory issues or skin irritation in pets.
