Keep your furry family members safe and comfortable during the strong weather with these simple but effective tips
Just a few weeks after the ice and snow that covered most of Ireland, there’s another weather emergency upon us.
As the whole country prepares for the impact of Storm Éowyn on Friday 24 January, it is imperative that we take all the precautions necessary to keep our families safe – including our pets.
Here are a few tips for pet owners from Petmania to ensure their animals stay calm and happy while the wind is howling outside:
Create a safe haven indoors – Storms can be overwhelming for pets due to loud noises and changes in pressure. Designate a quiet, secure spot in your home where your pet can feel safe and shielded from the outside chaos. Use familiar bedding, toys, and even calming sprays or pheromone diffusers. If possible, set up the space away from windows or areas where the wind might sound loudest.
Plan for bathroom breaks – Dogs still need their walks and bathroom breaks, but it’s essential to do so safely. Take them out well before the storm hits and keep these outings brief. Use a secure leash or harness to prevent any escapes, particularly if sudden gusts of wind or noises frighten them.
Avoid outdoor risks – During the storm, keep all pets—dogs, cats, and even farm animals—indoors. Flying debris, flooding, and extreme weather conditions can pose serious dangers. If you must take your pet outside, ensure they are supervised and only for essential reasons.
Secure pet housing – If you have outdoor pets, such as rabbits, guinea pigs, or birds, move their enclosures indoors or to a sheltered area. Check that they are dry, warm, and protected from drafts. Add extra bedding or insulation for comfort and warmth.
Stay calm – Pets are highly attuned to their owners’ emotions and may react to your stress or anxiety. Stay calm and speak to your pet in a soothing tone. If possible, engage them with games, gentle grooming, or other activities to distract them from the storm.
Emergency kit essentials – Prepare a pet emergency kit with the following essentials:
- A supply of pet food and clean water (enough for 3 days).
- Blankets or towels to keep them warm.
- Any required medications.
- A leash, harness, and travel carrier in case of evacuation.
- Updated identification on their collar and microchip.
