After debuting in The Chocolate Factory in October 2023, the Dublin Independent Fashion Weekend was a huge hit with designers and fashion enthusiasts alike. This year, the creatives behind the event have decided to go even bigger.
Irish designers have truly taken the fashion industry by storm as of late. We are an incredibly creative nation and international fashion houses and industry leaders have really been picking up on these skills.
With the likes of Seán McGirr being appointed head of creative at Alexander McQueen and Jonathan Anderson shaping LOEWE into the covetable brand it is today alongside his own label, the sky is the limit when it comes to Irish designers.
Most recently, Michael Stewart of fashion brand, Standing Ground, won the inaugural Savoir-Faire Prize at the 2024 LVMH Prize earlier this month. This included a grant of €200,000 and a one year mentorship.
Simone Rocha is also captivating the global fashion scene with her signature gritty yet gorgeous designs being worn by the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, ASAP Rocky and Cara Delevingne.
With that being said, there was a massive gap in our own strategies in showcasing the talent that we have here in Ireland. In steps the creative spirit that is Ríon Hannora alongside fellow designers and brands, Aisling Duffy, Laoise Carey, Mar Knitwear, The Zero Waster, Shock of Grey and Seeking Judy.
What started as a conversation between designers about creating more opportunities to champion Independent Fashion and Accessory Designers in Ireland had evolved into a three-day event and thus, the Dublin Independent Fashion Festival was born in October of last year.
The inaugural event took place in the industrial setting of Dublin’s Chocolate Factory featuring an evening fashion show, static fashion exhibitions, pop-up shoppable designer showrooms and panel discussions focused around sustainability and Independent Design. The festival has grown in demand and in size this year with the “weekend” becoming a week long affair and now 22 designers will have the opportunity to showcase their work to the general public and fashion enthusiasts alike.
Inspired by the likes of Dover Street Market, each designer will have their own showroom style space to showcase their brand which will take place in Dublin’s beautiful Smock Alley Theatre on 15 – 16 November.
The eight inspirational creatives driving the Dublin Independent Fashion Week are self-funding this series of events while still running their independent businesses. True passion and incredible work ethic if you ask me!
Whilst yes, Irish designers are doing incredibly well overseas, and we are so proud to see them soar, this concept of highlighting our own talent here in Ireland is so important. Having a space and time to celebrate and share what our talented designers and makers can do is so exciting and will no doubt leave you feeling inspired and hopefully introduced to some new makers and styles that you might just fall in love with.
