After months of speculation, it has been announced that Claire will replace RTÉ legend Seán O’Rourke on the iconic show

Claire Byrne will be the permanent replacement for RTÉ Radio 1 presenter Seán O’Rourke, who retired from the Today programme earlier this year.

“I am truly delighted, honoured and humbled to be taking on this new role at RTÉ Radio 1. My job will be to represent the voices of the RTÉ Radio 1 listeners, and to always ask the questions they want answered at this most critical time. I won’t let them down,” Claire says.

Sarah McInerney has been praised for her work as the the host in the interim, and will remain working in RTÉ. Her new project is to be announced in the coming weeks.

When Claire appeared on the cover of the July | August issue of Irish Country Magazine, she said she was flattered by the rumours that she was next in line for the coveted position.

“It’s so lovely that people would think I’d be good enough to do that role. You never know is the answer, but it’s great to be considered in that rollcall where Pat Kenny once sat and Seán sat and Sarah [McInerney]’s there now, so I just don’t know,” she told Klara Heron during the interview.

“I never say no to anything and I never say I definitely want to do something either because things happen in this business, I just try to do the job that I’m currently doing to the best of my ability and then just see what follows on from that. That’s always been the way I’ve lived in my work life so we’ll see what happens.”
