Why you should celebrate your single status this Valentine’s Day

valentine's day

Whether you’re on your own by choice or actively looking for a partner, 14 Feb is a great opportunity to remind yourself of the benefits of living a happy solo life

It’s hard to avoid Valentine’s Day.

From social media to the high street, the world and it’s mother seems intent on adding flowers, hearts or some sort of “love” theme to everything from clothing and makeup to baked goods!

It can be a lot for some people – particularly if they’ve recently come out of a relationship, experienced bereavement, or simply haven’t had a relationship in a long time.

But even though there may be lonely moments, there’s a lot to be said for being the master of your own destiny and knowing that your next great love could be just around the corner.

Love comes in lots of different forms so if romance isn’t on your agenda this year, here are other lovely parts of your life that are worth celebrating this Valentine’s Day:

Your pet

Love doesn’t come more unconditional than the love your pet has for you. If you’re lucky enough to be greeted by a wagging tail and furry cuddles at the end of a long day, don’t take it for granted.

Your siblings

Yes, they might drive you mad from time to time but at the end of the day, having brothers and sisters to turn to when life’s waters get choppy is a blessing in disguise. Send them a text telling them how much they mean to you. Or, maybe just a funny GIF. They’ll get it.

Your friends

Your friends are the family you choose for yourself. Cherish them and keep them close – regardless of your relationship status.

Your family

It’s only as we get older that we truly appreciate how rare and beautiful it is to have the support and security of loving parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins that we can turn to for a chat, a cuppa or a bit of craic when we need it.

Your ex

It’s much better to be single on Valentine’s Day than in a relationship with the wrong person. If you feel happy and safe because you left a relationship that made you feel undervalued, abused or trapped, that is a reason to celebrate.

Yourself

Self-care, self-love, self-appreciation – call it what you like, this is a day to be the love of your own life! Here are 5 ways to treat yourself:

  • Pick up a colourful bouquet of flowers and place it at the centre of your kitchen table or counter
  • Chill out with a good Netflix series and your favourite snack – all the better because you don’t have to share it
  • Run a luxurious bubble bath complete with candles, petals, music and your favourite beverage
  • Take a few minutes to write out all the things you love about yourself in your journal
  • Go online and purchase that beautiful piece of jewellery you’ve had your eye on for a while. Why not? You deserve it.
