Why period underwear is a great option for that time of the month

The sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to disposable tampons and pads is growing in popularity

If the thought of wearing period knickers gives you the ‘ick’ or you imagine that they will result in leakage or staining, it’s time to revisit the idea.

Given that one pair could replace more than 100 single-use sanitary products, it’s no wonder that sustainability influencers and those concerned with climate change are extolling its virtues to their followers and beyond.

Not only is it better for the planet, it is also extremely comfortable as they are essentially ‘big knickers’ with in-built padding. The underwear comes in different styles and different levels of absorption to accommodate the various types of flow – light, medium and heavy. It’s up to you to experiment and find the pair that best suits you, whether you just want to wear them overnight or during various activities like exercising or socialising.

If you’re not convinced, you can always use period pants in conjunction with other products during your cycle or just wear them at home until you feel more confident.

Maintenance

In terms of looking after them, it’s advised to rinse the garments with cold water after use and then throw into the washing machine with your other clothes. A mesh bag is handy for added protection but not essential, and it has been noted that you should not use fabric softener as this can affect the absorbency of the material.

Availability

If you’re thinking that these are elusive items that can only be purchased online from specialist menstrual companies, you couldn’t be further from the truth. You can, of course, purchase them online but period underwear is now so widely available that you can also pick it up on your next trip to the supermarket.

Here are just a few of the places where you can get the eco-friendly underwear:

Marks and Spencer: 3pk Heavy Absorbency Full Briefs – €24
