To celebrate Mother’s Day, the team behind Irish Country Magazine share the words of wisdom their mothers passed down to them
As the saying goes, ‘mother knows best’, and as we grow older many of us carry within us our mother’s words of wisdom and advice to help us navigate life. This Mother’s Day, the team behind Irish Country Magazine are sharing the words of advice their mothers gave to them.

“My Mam lives by the phrase ‘go with the flow’ – she even had it tattooed onto her foot for her 60th birthday while my sisters and I looked on in shock and awe! She taught me that life is ever-changing and you can’t rely on things that are outside of your control, so go along with the moving tides and enjoy each day. She and my late Dad also gave us a gift for really appreciating nature, which ties into her mantra: if you notice the small joys that surround you every day, life can be magic.”

“It has been my greatest privilege to be so loved by my wonderful mother. From when I was a child and she would sing You Are My Sunshine and I Just Called To Say I Love You at night (I once saw Stevie Wonder performing it on TV and was baffled as I thought she had made it up); to sleeping beside me in bed as a heartbroken teen; to always stocking up on avocados and leaving a hot water bottle under my pillow when I go home to visit as an adult. She has taught me to care deeply about your people, and to find strength to walk away when that same loyalty and respect isn’t reciprocated. She has instilled in me to love myself first, and to face any problems head-on; I clearly remember her say, “you can’t run away from yourself” as a lost young woman in her early 20s, which has always stuck with me. Other lessons include: Always look after your skin. Don’t forget your coat. Take your B12. Don’t drink too much. And if you do drink too much, don’t expect any sympathy!”

“My mam’s favourite phrase is ‘what’s for you won’t pass you’ which sounds a little cliché at first, but actually, those words have brought me a lot of comfort through the years. Setbacks are an inevitable part of life and each time I have experienced one, a job rejection, a breakup and whatever other obstacles life can put in your way, I hear her words ringing in my head. Of course, it doesn’t quell the sting in the moment, but it does remind me to trust in what plans the universe has for me and so far, it has lead me to good places. She also passed down her love of nail polish to me. Having my nails painted always makes me feel put together and in control – thanks for that, Mam!”

“A few years ago after my dad passed away I was driving along the coast with my mam. It was a hard time but she reminded me to keep moving forward. She said to look out at the sea and notice how the waves just keep on going in and out. The world felt like it should stop because I was so sad, but really life keeps moving forward and as hard as it can be sometimes it’s a beautiful thing to remember that no matter how tough life can be and no matter how much we can miss someone, we always have the opportunity to keep experiencing new and beautiful things in this world. It’s important to sit with your sadness but not stay there for too long either.”

“Becoming a mother myself has made me appreciate so much more how hard my mother worked as a single mother to solely provide and care for her three daughters, despite challenges she faced herself. Her strength and resilience taught me that hard work and perseverance are the keys to success.”
