Must-have dermatological ingredients for an effective skincare routine

There are some super ingredients in skincare that provide great benefits to the skin, in particular when it comes to slowing down the effects of ageing on the skin

In partnership with La Roche-Posay

Because skincare is so individual, it can be hard to know what your skin needs at any given time. However, there are some super ingredients in skincare that provide great benefits to the skin, in particular when it comes to slowing down the effects of ageing on the skin.

“Typically aging begins at 25,” says consultant dermatologist Professor Niki Ralph, “early prevention is therefore key.”

1 Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant. Ideally it should be applied in the morning to prevent damage from free radicals. For anyone who is suffering with early signs of fine lines and wrinkles, or if they’re worried about dull and tired skin, this is a great versatile ingredient. The La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum has a lovely lightweight texture and is even suitable for those who suffer with oily, acne-prone skin. Vitamin C may increase skin’s sensitivity to UV light and is therefore recommended to always apply an SPF on top of your Vitamin C. The La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 Invisible Fluid spf50+ is an ultra lightweight broad spectrum sun protection, that is suitable for everyday use.

2 Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a hero ingredient. It is suitable for all skin types, from acne prone skin to rosacea prone skin and even the most sensitive patients with eczema prone skin. The La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 Serum is a super hydrating Hyaluronic Acid serum in a lightweight texture that can be used both in morning and/or evening. This serum contains both low molecular weight and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid, which means that it re-plumps the skin by the larger molecules sitting on the skin surface and the smaller molecules penetrating deeper to volumise the skin. This is the perfect serum for anyone suffering with fine lines and dehydrated skin.

3 Retinol

So retinol is part of the vitamin A group of skin actives. The La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 serum is a fantastic beginner product for anyone to use whether they have sensitive skin or not. It’s 0.3% retinol and ideally it should be applied to the skin at night time when it can soak in overnight and create the benefits of improving fine lines and wrinkles. It is an absolute must to ensure you use an SPF each morning when you’re using retinoids. The La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum can be combined with the NEW Pure Niacinamide 10 serum or also the Hyalu B5 Serum, which prevent the dryness that some retinoids can cause on the skin.

Ideally, one should introduce it every two to three nights, just a small amount and also using a moisturiser with it and be sure to avoid the lip and the eye area where the skin is most sensitive and thinnest.

4 Niacinamide

Next we have niacinamide, another hero ingredient, and this new product from La Roche-Posay, Pure Niacinamide 10, contains 10% of niacinamide and is a real multitasker. Not only does it contain hyaluronic acid, which is suitable for those with the most sensitive skin, it also helps improve the appearance of dark spots and marks. This new product has a silky, hydrating texture so people will love the feel of it on their skin. It can be used both in the morning and or evening. This hero ingredient is even suitable for those suffering with acne prone and rosacea prone skin. Plus, it’s great if you’re using a retinol as part of an anti-aging routine because this will provide adequate hydration to prevent the dryness that sometimes retinols can induce.

And let’s not forget…

The most effective anti-ageing product is SPF. Up to 80% of our skins ageing is attributed to UV damage. UVA rays are present all year round, which is why dermatologists such as Niki Ralph recommend applying a broad spectrum SPF every morning. On top of this, when using active ingredients such as Retinol and Vitamin C, the skin’s sensitivity to UV light can increase which is why it is a must to wear an SPF if these ingredients are added to your routine. The La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMUNE 400 invisible fluid SPF50+ is a cult favourite. This provides an ultra-high UVA/UVB protection in an invisible lightweight texture that leaves no white marks, making it the perfect SPF for daily use.
