The spooky season can be a tough time for many animals, especially those with a nervous disposition

Halloween is a time enjoyed by adults and children alike but it’s not always a fun experience for our four-legged family members. Loud noises, scary costumes and an influx of strangers at the front door can trigger anxiety in even the most easygoing furry friends.

Thankfully, there is a lot you can do to prepare your pet for the festivities, ensuring they stay comfortable and relaxed throughout the mid-term break.

Why pets get stressed

Loud noises such as fireworks, parties, and other festive sounds can be extremely distressing for our pets, especially animals with sensitive hearing. Additionally, changes in their daily routine, like having guests over, travelling, or altered schedules can disrupt their sense of security and stability.

How to recognise the signs of pet anxiety

Recognising the signs of anxiety in your pet is crucial for providing them with the comfort and support they need. These signs can manifest in various ways, including excessive barking, panting, or pacing, as well as attempts to hide or escape. Some pets may also exhibit destructive behaviour like chewing or scratching, or experience changes in their appetite or toilet habits. Being attuned to these subtle cues will enable you to intervene early and alleviate their anxiety.

Managing pet anxiety

Dawn Greer, a seasoned dog trainer at Petmania, offers her insights on navigating the holiday season with your pet: “The holidays can be a whirlwind of excitement, but it’s essential to remember that our pets experience the world differently. By gradually introducing them to the sights and sounds of the season, maintaining their normal routines as much as possible, and providing them with a safe haven to retreat to when they feel overwhelmed, we can significantly reduce their anxiety and ensure they too can enjoy the holidays.”

This gradual introduction can involve exposing your pet to the sounds they may encounter in the weeks leading up to Halloween. For instance, playing recordings of fireworks at a low volume can help them acclimate to the noise.

Maintaining your pet’s regular routine as much as possible is also crucial for their sense of stability. This includes sticking to their usual feeding, walking, and playtime schedule.

Additionally, providing a safe space where your pet can retreat if they feel overwhelmed is essential. This could be a quiet room with soft music, a crate with their favourite blanket, or an area with white noise to mask outside sounds, equipped with their familiar toys or calming products.

By understanding your pet’s needs and proactively addressing potential stressors, you can ensure they have a happy and stress-free week, allowing them to enjoy the festivities alongside you. Remember, a little preparation and empathy can go a long way in making the holidays enjoyable for every member of your family, including your furry friends.
