We’re taking a look at some of the beautiful Irish designs that feature in the popular series And Just Like That and in Sarah Jessica Parker’s real life wardrobe
Whether you’re hate-watching it, viewing it for the nostalgia factor or just simply love Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, there’s no denying that millions of us are tuning in to And Just Like That every week.
But what makes it even more exciting for us is that the series has already showcased some of Ireland’s hottest designers, bringing a unique style and personality to the characters’ incredible outfits.
Recent NCAD design graduate Gabrielle Malone’s hand-knit cardigan can be seen hanging in the iconic wardrobe of Carrie Bradshaw during two scenes in the first season of the show. Describing the incredible way her design found it’s way into Carrie’s treasure trove of a closet, she said:
“A set designer was gifted the cardigan, to which she then followed me on Instagram and found out all about my brand and it’s ethos. Then she wore the cardigan on set one day and Sarah Jessica Parker and the director Michael Patrick King saw it, complimented her and she told them how I was a young Irish designer – and just like that my cardigan was put in last minute in the episode! It was so amazing to have someone who I never met showcase a young designer and I am so grateful to that set decorator.”
Irish brand Tríona Design was also lucky enough to be worn by Carrie in the second season of the show. In November 2022, Sarah Jessica Parker was spotted wearing the Faye Double Breasted Mac coat while filming scenes for AJLT causing demand and enquiries for the coat to immediately skyrocket. Known as the ‘home of Donegal tweed’, Tríona Design is located in Donegal but you can also shop online at trionadesign.com.
And let’s not forget the wacky pigeon bag created by J.W. Anderson that can be seen tucked under Sarah Jessica Parker’s arm in a couple of scenes. Designing for Spanish luxury house LOEWE as well as his own name sake label, J.W. Anderson is originally from Magherafelt in Northern Ireland and has gone on to create highly artistic creations, including this very unique pigeon clutch bag.
The power of Carrie Bradshaw
After appearing in the hit series, both Tríona Design and Gabrielle Malone watched their designs sell out rapidly.
Gabrielle said: “To get that feature – even if it was only for a few seconds, on such an iconic show, completely changed my business. In the short term my entire collection sold out the weekend it aired, but in the long term a lot of people heard about my brand who may not have found me through social media and it really opened the doors for a wider audience to discover my brand.”
Emma Quinn from Tríona Design said: “Immediately, we were inundated with customer queries about the coat. The coat sold out within 24 hours of the images appearing online. We were also honoured to be featured in the same episode as designer Paula Rowan, who designed a beautiful pair of gloves for Nicole Ari Parker.”
Paula Rowan’s gloves are already iconic in their own right. With the likes of Madonna wearing them for her music videos and also gracing the pages of Vogue in the most high fashion editorial shoots, it only makes sense that this sought after accessory makes an appearance in the show. Nicole aka. Lisa Todd Wexley wears them in a powerful scene where she braves a snow storm to get to an event before going to the ladies’ room to reattach her wig.
A love for the Irish
Of course, Sarah Jessica Parker is no stranger to Irish designers as her strong relationship with Philip Treacy shows us over the years. She most recently wore one of his pieces to the holy grail of fashion events – the Met Gala. The Sex and the City star has been wearing his creations for almost a decade now. It is the perfect pairing as she loves to experiment with her style both on and off screen and Philip’s designs always push the boat.
Most recently, after a trip to her and hubby Matthew Broderick’s “home away from home” in Co. Donegal, Sarah Jessica shared a picture of her tweed jacket from Magee 1886 to her Instagram and we must agree she has great taste. This heritage brand really make pieces to last a lifetime in your wardrobe. We’re excited to see how she styles it!
It’s safe to say that there is no shortage of creativity oozing from our little island and it’s wonderful to see it recognised in a series that celebrates fashion and truly allows the clothes to be part of the storyline. Check out the HBO Max series now on Sky Go or NOW TV.
