Celebrating a rich Irish heritage
Building on its win last year at the Retail Excellence Ireland Awards – where Carraig Donn was named as the Best Fashion Store for its fabulous shopping emporium at Golden Island Shopping Centre Athlone – this year the celebrations continue as the company marks 60 years in Irish retail.
Carraig Donn was founded by the late Máire and Pádraig Hughes in 1965. Máire, a mother of 13, opened the craft store Carraig Donn Boutique on Bridge St, Westport, Co Mayo. The store launched with a selection of Irish knitwear, gifts and jewellery. Máire, a talented seamstress and gifted knitter, could never have anticipated the global success her company would embark upon over its 60-year evolution.

The Hughes family children all grew up working in the business. Summer holidays were spent producing crafts and working at the store on Inishmore, Aran Islands, which opened in 1969. Today, sons Pat and Vincent Hughes remain at the helm of the business, with its network of 43 stores across towns and cities in Ireland, as well as the online platform.
While Carraig Donn is proud of its heritage roots, the company has evolved over the years. It has flourished into a modern high street chain with a range of exclusive labels in its fashion, jewellery and homeware collections. The shops stand proud in centres across Ireland amongst top international retail brands. Celebratory 60th anniversary events are planned throughout the year and you can find out more at carraigdonn.com.
