How to bring light into your home this spring

How to bring light into your home this spring

Spring cleaning is so much more than decluttering; it can really help to lift our moods and improve overall wellbeing.

Spring cleaning is often seen as a practical task; clearing out cupboards, freshening up rooms and starting the season with a blank slate. But beyond appearances, it’s also an opportunity to refresh how your home supports your wellbeing.

As the days grow longer, Spring naturally encourages us to open windows, let in more light and rethink the routines that may have built up over winter. Research from VELUX shows that while many homeowners focus on energy efficiency to save on costs, fewer realise just how closely it’s linked to comfort, mood and overall health.

Fresh air: the simplest Spring refresh

After months of keeping windows closed to retain warmth, indoor air can quickly feel stale. Everyday activities such as cooking, showering and even sleeping increase humidity indoors, which can lead to condensation and a heavy-feeling environment.

VELUX recommends short, regular bursts of ventilation throughout the day. Opening windows for five to 15 minutes, three to four times daily, can refresh indoor air while minimising heat loss. This simple habit can help reduce moisture, improve air quality and make rooms feel noticeably fresher.

Why daylight matters more than we think

Spring’s longer days offer the perfect opportunity to make better use of natural light at home. Beyond brightening rooms, daylight plays a key role in regulating our internal body clock, supporting better sleep, energy levels and overall mood.

It’s therefore time to consider how much light your home is missing. VELUX roof windows can transform dark, overlooked spaces into vibrant areas for living, working or simply relaxing. Spaces that allow light to enter from above – through roof windows – benefit from deeper daylight penetration, helping rooms feel lighter, more open and more uplifting even on overcast days.

Making the most of natural light also reduces reliance on artificial lighting, helping save energy as the season brightens.

A smarter way to reset energy efficiency

Spring cleaning is also a natural moment to review how well your home performs. Older windows can be a hidden source of heat loss, impacting comfort and energy use long after winter has passed.

VELUX suggests assessing the condition of your roof windows and considering energy-efficient upgrades where appropriate. Even smaller steps, like adding blinds, can help retain warmth and create a more comfortable, healthier indoor environment.

Small changes that last

Refreshing your home doesn’t have to mean a full renovation. Simple shifts like improving ventilation habits, maximising daylight and addressing areas of heat loss, can all contribute to a home that feels healthier and more comfortable all year round.

This Spring, let your home shine with VELUX. Because a brighter, fresher home starts from the top – enhancing not just your space, but how it makes you feel.
