If you feel you might have damaged your skin barrier, here’s how you can repair it.
A damaged skin barrier is not an usual complaint, especially when we’re using a plethora of different skincare products all claiming to do different things. This damage usually occurs when the outer later of the skin is compromised by excessive or unsuitable skincare use, over-exfoliation or environmental stressors like cold weather and UV rays.
You’ll know you have disrupted your barrier if you experience dry, red and flaky skin, if you skin has a rough texture or feels tight or uncomfortable. It’s likely you’ll also feel stinging when you try to apply skincare products to it.
Thankfully, there is a way to reverse the damage, as Niamh Hogan, founder of Enniscorthy-based skincare brand Holos shares her advice.

“If you have damaged your skin barrier, spots and dull peeling skin is likely”, Niamh explains. “Firstly, stop using all actives, like scrubs, acids and retinol, switching instead to a gentle cleansing and moisturising routine, until the skin repairs”.
Essentially, stripping back your skincare routine to cover only the basics, will aid your skin back to its normal state. Gentle care that focuses on hydration and recovery should see your skin go back to normal in around two to four weeks.
Sharing a handy tip, Niamh also says that when repairing a damaged skincare carrier we need to watch out for active ingredients in make-up too, like foundation.
Once the skin has healed, Niamh says that healthy and glowing skin doesn’t have to be achieved through harsh or active products. “Targeted exfoliation, a brighter complexion, diminished lines and lasting hydration doesn’t require a myriad of different daily applications”. Instead, brands such as Niamh’s own Holos can deliver powerful results using gentle ingredients derived from nature.
Researching a brand and products that work in conjunction with your skin type is key to achieving your happiest and healthiest skin yet.
