Did you know that grey hair can leave your scalp more exposed to the sun? Here’s how to combat it

Did you know that grey hair can leave your scalp more exposed to the sun? Here’s how to combat it

While Ireland is soaking up some much-welcome sunshine this summer, scalp protection is important for sun safety.

The good weather looks set to stick around – and we’re not complaining. By now, we’re aware of the importance of correct sun protection. While we know to apply factor 50 every two hours to guarantee proper protection on the face and body, we often forget about scalp and hair protection.

Those with grey, blonde and red hair are most vulnerable as lighter hair provides less protection from the sun’s UV rays. As the head is exposed to the sun, it comes with a risk of scalp sunburn and UV related damage.

With that in mind, it’s important to take extra precautions to ensure adequate sun safety all over. Fresha beauty expert Annabelle Taurua shares how to take care of your lighter hair this summer.

“Those with blonde, grey, red or bleached hair are at a greater risk of scalp sunburn because lighter hair contains less melanin, the natural pigment that helps protect against UV radiation. With less natural protection in both the hair and underlying skin, harmful UV rays can reach the scalp more easily, increasing the risk of sunburn and long-term damage,” she shares.

“The sun doesn’t just affect your scalp; it can also impact the health and appearance of your hair. UV exposure can damage the hair structure by breaking down the proteins that keep strands strong, leaving hair feeling dry, rough and brittle. UVA rays can also break down colour pigments, causing dyed and natural shades to fade.”

To prevent this, Annabelle recommends using haircare products containing UV protection.

“When spending time outdoors, consider using leave-in sprays or dry oils containing UV filters, some I recommend are Charles Worthington Sunshine UV Protection Leave-In Spray or Schwarzkopf BC Sun Protect Scalp and Hair Mist with SPF 20. These lightweight products can be applied to damp or dry hair before sun exposure to help create a protective barrier and reduce the effects of UV damage.”

Annabelle also recommends a more effective protection measure by wearing physical protection in the form of a hat or bandana.

“Physical protection remains one of the most effective ways to prevent direct sun exposure. Wearing a broad-brimmed hat or a scarf is not only a stylish summer accessory but also provides an additional layer of protection for both your scalp and coloured strands.”

“Finally, for those with blonde or grey hair, incorporating purple or blue-toning treatments into your routine can help neutralise unwanted yellow and orange tones caused by sun exposure and keep your colour looking fresher throughout the summer.”
