Cycling trails to explore this summer

Discover some of the most beautiful parts of the country by bike this summer

Great Western Greenway

You’ve no doubt seen endless pictures on Instagram of people cycling through the countryside this summer. But there is really no end to the beautiful places to explore by bike around Ireland.

Here are just a few cycling jaunts to consider for your next Irish adventure.

Great Western Greenway

The Great Western Greenway is an off-road cycling and walking trail in Ireland. The route follows an old railway line that closed in 1937, running from Achill to Mulranney, to Newport and ends in Westport. See stunning beaches, the idyllic west of Ireland landscape and the looming might of Croagh Patrick towering over you as you enjoy the trail. greenway.ie

Stay: Knockranny House Hotel

The Suir Blueway

With 21km of cycling trails (and 53km of kayaking, if you’re feeling adventurous!), this cycling trails extends from Clonmel to Carrick-on-Suir. There are old castles, tower houses and churches tto see, brilliant local food and lots of heritage and history to enjoy nearby too. For inspiration for your itinerary, visit tipperary.com.

Portumna Forest Park

The 450 hectare park on the shoreof Lough Derg is a stunning haven for wildlife and dense woodland. The park is generally quite flat, so easy for all members of the family to explore by bike. There are four trails available, from short 1.4km and 2km routes for kids, and then there are two longer trails, Rinmaher and Bonaveen. Combined, the two routes add up to 18km.

Stay: Podumna Glamping Village

Podumna is located in the heart of Portumna town, offering a fun woodland setting in a central location. You can book an eco pod for up to five people or a family cabin for up to six people, all with heatin gand seating areas for you to sit out under the stars. Find out more at podumnavillage.ie.

Lough Key Forest Park

There are 350 hectares of parkland and forest to explore at Lough Key Forest Park in Roscommon, with bridges and tunnels to discover. There is the added bonus of all the fun amenities and attractions at the park too, if you have adventurous kids to entertain. Leisurely cyclists can avail of an e-bike from Electric Bike Trails in Leitrim village. loughkey.ie

The newly built self-catering cottages are just a five minute stroll from the main reception desk of the hotel. Waterford Greenway

The Waterford Greenway extends from Waterford City to Dungarvan along an old railway line. Cycling towards Dungarvan and seeing the view of Clonea Beach before you is a gorgeous experience. This 46km trail has plenty of beautiful pitstops nearby, from Mount Congreve gardens, to the Comeragh Mountains, the sunny South East is a must for your 2020 getaway.
