We all have the power to fight climate change
As Earth Day approaches, on 22 April, it is a great time to reflect on the way we live our lives on our wonderful planet. It is important to check in on the ways that we may be able to be more considerate, particularly when it comes to climate change.
Are there things we can be doing differently to live more sustainably? Or maybe there are initiatives such as planting more trees or adding to the biodiversity around us in support of the nature that lives alongside us here on Earth?
We have created a round up of sustainability initiatives that can be found across Ireland. Some may seem smaller than others, but even baby steps will lead towards a more sustainable planet and greener environment.
Repair and Re-wear
Penneys has begun hosting a series of free repair workshops across multiple stores in Europe. Over 100 events have been running across Ireland, The U.K., France, The Netherlands and Italy to date. The focus is on basic repair techniques including sewing hacks to empower people to repair and re-wear their clothes. All workshops are free to attend and after their huge success in both Dundrum and Wexford stores, upcoming dates have been announced for Dublin’s Mary Street store on 24 and 25 April. You can book your place here to learn from experienced tutors Orla Kelly and Michelle Murphy. Everyone who attends will receive a sewing kit, repair booklet and a reusable tote bag on arrival. From denim to embroidery there are six different classes to choose from over the course of the two days. For those who can’t make these dates, Penneys also offers a series of step-by-step sewing and mending videos, hosted on the Love It For Longer page on the Penneys website. primark.com

Reuse, Rejuvenate, Revamp!
If you are getting fed up of looking at the same old furniture in your home and are seeking something a little different, then you need to check out The Revamp Tramp. Book into a DIY or upcycling furniture workshop and unleash your inner creative. Not only are you contributing to a more circular economy by upcycling furniture, rather than purchasing something new, but you will also be so satisfied to have created something for yourself that is totally unique. You can enquire here for a one on one session or else in groups of up to 10 people.
Planting the future
The Canopy (Formerly Johnstown Court in Co Sligo) is proudly owned by a local family who have been dedicated to rejuvenating this area. With community and sustainability at their core, The Canopy decided to partner with Hometree. They have purchased 90 acres of land along the Easky River in West Sligo. The land consists over 10 acres of ancient native hazel woods and was formerly used as a cutover bog. Hometree will be reinstating the boglands and rewilding the site with native Irish trees. The focus is to address Ireland’s declining biodiversity and climate change challenges. The collaboration with The Canopy has enabled Hometree to implement various projects focused on land rejuvenation and biodiversity through restoration and education.
Flea to the market
Markets were once such a vital part of life and communities in Ireland and abroad. Today, we are so spoilt for choice with endless international high street stores lining our shopping streets. However, if you are seeking something a little more unique and also more sustainable from a circular economy point of view, then Flea Markets are the place for you. Mother Jones Flea Market on York Street in Co Cork is a little treasure trove. From clothing to quirky souvenirs, you will not leave empty handed. We Love Markets are also due to host another exciting Flea Market as The Digital Hub on Dublin’s Thomas Street on Sunday 28th April. Keep up to date with how to apply for a stall and more upcoming events here.
