The dramatic landscapes and historical villages of Ireland have long served as a stage for filmmakers. If you’re a movie buff, or just a lover of Irish-scenery, these spots are well-worth ticking off your Ireland bucket list.
Inis Mór, Aran Islands
As seen in films such as The Banshees of Inisherin (2022), Inis Mór was one of the primary filming locations for this Oscar-nominated film, capturing the real windswept spirit of the Atlantic Ocean. The largest of the Aran Islands, Inis Mór is known for its dramatic cliff edges, traditional stone walls, and beautiful sea views. The island history is documented in 1934 in The Man of Aran, which was the first documentary to capture the authentic lifestyle of those living in the western islands.
Dark Hedges, County Antrim
Tucked away in the quiet countryside, Dark Hedges can be seen in the global phenomenon Game of Thrones as a location for the “Kingsroad”. Lined with tall Beech trees bending over to form a tunnel of branches, Dark Hedges has become one of the most photographed spots in the north of Ireland. To feel like you are stepping into a storybook, the journey is a short and easy stop-off if you have any plans to drive through Antrim. The quietness of early mornings or later evening is the best time to visit on a walk if you’re on foot.
Trinity College & Howth, County Dublin
If you’re looking for a trip that blends history with a fresh sea breeze, these two Normal People (2020) locations are perfect. Start at Trinity College, where Marianne and Connell spent their university years and have a wander around the Old Library and the Long Room and pass through the historic squares. Then jump on the DART out to Howth for harbour views and cliff walks ideal for a summer afternoon walk.
Ceann Sibéal, County Kerry
Located on the Dingle peninsula with towering cliffs and wide views over the Atlantic, Ceann Sibéal has spectacular views that can also be seen in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). The monastic settlements in the film were inspired by Skellig Michael, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; they opted to recreate their famous beehives on the mainland. Ceann Sibéal stands out as an essential summer destination for anyone looking to explore the beauty of the Kerry coastline.
Curracloe Beach, County Wexford
As seen in Saving Private Ryan (1998), Curracloe Beach was used by Steven Spielberg to recreate the D-Day landings. Curracloe Beach can also be seen showing a more nostalgic and sun-drenched side in Brooklyn (2015). The beautiful golden sand beach, known to families by their sweeping dunes and blue flag waters, also neighbours a nature reserve and forest trails, making this gem in Wexford a must-visit location.
Trim Castle in County Meath
As featured in Mel Gibson’s Oscar-winning Braveheart (1995), the impressive Trim Castle served as a backdrop for scenes to stand in place of the English city of York. Standing as one of the best-preserved Anglo-Norman Castles In Ireland, you can explore the grounds and the tower itself. The town of Trim is also an excellent historical and peaceful location just a short drive from Dublin.
