Liss Ard Estate, outside Skibbereen in West Cork, is an opportunity to overdose on the sensory — from land to sea to sky. A place where good local food, great music, cosy and comfortable surroundings, lush forests with velvet moss underfoot and broad shining lakes are the sensational surround-sound setting for two special experiences, one by day and one by night — James Turrell’s remarkable land artwork, the Irish Sky Garden, and nighttime kayaking on Lough Hyne, the marine lake close by.

Renowned American artist James Turrell’s only Irish installation, the Sky Garden at Liss Ard Estate is a deep green bowl of grass open to the sky, designed to be a naked-eye observatory on a grand and dramatic scale. The West Cork sky is the subject here, and this extraordinary crater has been exquisitely designed to make sure there is nothing to distract you from the perfect view, straight up over your head.

At nighttime, a very different but equally breathtaking experience involves being out on the water from dusk into deep darkness. Led by the professionals from Atlantic Sea Kayaking, this night kayak begins with sunset, then the rising moon, the sounds of seabirds coming in to roost, the aromas of shore plants on the breeze, the panoply of stars overhead, the astonishing bioluminescence and the deep, dark peace and serenity of night.

Liss Ard Estate is a magical place, where lush gardens, lakes and trails surround a country manor that has recently been carefully and coolly refurbished by its new owners, and where the team now includes the talents of chef Alex Petit, a French-born, West Cork expert, whose menus showcase the best of local ingredients from many producers who have become friends over the years.

Liss Ard Estate is delighted to give one lucky person the chance to win a two night stay at Liss Ard Estate with breakfast on each morning, private access to the Sky Garden, a two and a half hour nighttime kayak on Lough Hyne and dinner on one evening.
