The architect and TV presenter is passionate about helping people to introduce ‘classic furniture’ into their homes
Hugh Wallace has probably seen more home interiors than you’ve had hot dinners. The Home of the Year judge knows what he likes and as one of the best-known architects (and someone who is doing his own home renovation), he’s happy to share his knowledge with the rest of us.
So much so, that he has teamed up with EZ Living to launch the Sofa Workshop – a curated design-led collection of sofas, chairs and footstools that has his coveted seal of approval. From hand-crafted Italian leather to soft cotton velvets, the materials that go into each piece have been carefully selected to create a sofa that has lasting comfort and beauty.
Keen to find out more about Hugh’s thoughts on home interiors, we asked the expert a few more questions about current trends and the ‘timeless piece’ every home should have.
Interior trends are inescapable in your line of work. Are there any current ones that you really like?
What I like at the moment is that we have moved away from greys. Punches of colour are back in, as are warm off-whites and linens – texture and tactility.
Tech-savvy spaces are a big trend for 2024/25 – how do you feel about voice-activated systems that remove the need for switches, remote controls etc.?
Personally, I think it’s a waste of time. For me, I just want to press a button and know what it does. Not to wait for the tech to understand what I want to do. In fact, low tech rooms are hot at the minute – rooms with no capability to reach the outside world. This is now the ultimate luxury, no contact with outside – at one with your book or time to play your records.
What are your thoughts on multi-tasking furniture – wall beds, modular sofas, storage footstools etc.?
Love them in the right location. Particularly if you have a small room, these items add to the versatility and functionality of the room.
Tell us about the Sofa Workshop and how it will help customers who aren’t sure what to buy
I am delighted to be partnering with EZ Living Interiors on the Sofa Workshop. [It] is a collection that features classic designs reimagined for modern living, making it easier for people to choose pieces that will remain stylish and relevant over time.
With seven sofas and a gorgeous selection of chairs and footstools – there’s something for everyone. My personal favourite is the Scott. It exudes luxury and would be perfect in both a new build and an older home with more character. A pure classic!
The main theme of the collection is ‘timeless design for contemporary living’. What is the one timeless piece you think every home should have?
I would say chairs. The Momo Cream Accent Armchair features a beautifully crafted dark wood finish that, in contrast with the plush upholstery, adds a touch of sophistication to its overall design. In fifty years, these chairs will be worth more than they are today. That, to me, is classic furniture. It’s timeless.
