Nothing brightens up a home like some fresh blooms. Here an expert shares how to make them live longer.
If you were the lucky recipient of a fresh bouquet of flowers this Valentine’s Day, chances are you want to make them last for as long as possible.
Chatting with Joeanne Caffrey, founder of Joeanna Caffrey Flowers shares with us her top tips for making your fresh florals last longer.
Firstly, she says that the stem should always be cut at an angle before placing them into a vase. Then, the flower’s water should be changed every two days.
If you tend to display your flowers near a fruit bowl or radiator, you might want to place them elsewhere as placing fresh flowers near a fruit bowl can cause them to wilt, fade and shed petals prematurely. This is because ripening fruits, particularly bananas, and apples, release ethylene gas. This odorless plant hormone accelerates the aging process, shortening the lifespan of your bouquet. Similarly, radiators are also best avoided due to the intense, dry heat radiators emit can destroy flowers quickly by causing severe dehydration and wilting.
“A little care can make them last beautifully,” assures Joeanna.

If you’d like to treat yourself or someone you love to some fresh flowers, Joeanne recommends daffodils and tulips during springtime as not only do they brighten up an area, they also live a little longer as they’re currently in season.
