There’s plenty to settle down to watch on telly this autumn, take a look at some of our favourite picks and what to expect.
Jig
Creator of Derry Girls and How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, Lisa McGee is preparing to have us all laughing from our sitting rooms as her next big project delves into the world of competitive Irish Dancing. The six-part mockumentary will be a walk down memory lane for those who took Irish dancing classes as a child as it follows best friends Cara and Fletcher from the struggling Sweeney School of Dance in Derry as they take on a rival dancing school in Florida, US. Unfortunately, we have a little while to wait before this one is out as filming is set to begin in the North of Ireland next year.
The Rachel Incident
Thankfully one TV show that we don’t have too long to wait for is The Rachel Incident based on the book by Cork author Caroline O’Donoghue. Landing on Channel 4 this autumn, the eight-part series will follow main character Rachel Murray, a 20-year-old English literature student living and working in Cork, Ireland, during the 2008 recession. The show will star Máiréad Tyers, Ellis Howard, Sarah Greene and Daniel Ings.
House of Guinness Season Two
If you enjoyed season one of House of Guinness, you’re in luck as the show has just been renewed for a second season. With filming start in January 2027, we can expect many of the same faces including Anthony Boyle, Louis Partridge, Fionn O’Shea, James Norton and Niamh McCormack as the show picks up where we left off with the infamous Guinness family.
Youth
I don’t know about you, but life just hasn’t felt the same without Sharon Horgan regularly on our screens. Part of the brains behind hit TV shows like Bad Sisters, This Way Up, and Catastrophe, Sharon is treating us again to a brand new show, Youth. Written, executive produced and starring Sharon the show will follow a 50-year-old divorcee’s search for herself as she navigates singledom in her 50s, aging parents and parenting. Sharon’s onscreen son will also be played by Aran Murphy, Cillian Murphy’s rising star son. Catch it on HBO UK and Ireland on 21 September.
Tall Tales & Murder
From the creators of Love\Hate, a brand new dark comedy drama is landing on RTÉ this September. Tall Tales & Murder is a comedic crime drama adapted from the novels by Caimh McDonnell. It mixes a modern-day crime adventure in Dublin with an 8th-century tale of monks, Vikings, and a priceless holy book. It’s set to be as wacky as the description sounds and stars some very familiar faces including Ella Lily Hyland, Aidan Gillen, Philippa Dunne and Packy Lee. Out 27 September.
An Balla (The Wall)
An Balla (The Wall) is a TG4 documentary series presented by Síle Nic Chonaonaigh that explores four iconic global borders and the human stories behind them. Filmed across four continents, the series takes viewers to the Finnish-Russian border, São Paulo in Brazil, Vietnam and the Spain-Morocco frontier in Ceuta, exploring how walls and borders shape the lives of communities living on either side. On TG4 from Tuesday 8 September at 9.30pm.
Health Hysteria: Are Women Being Gaslit?
Part of Virgin Media’s Autumn schedule, Health Hysteria: Are Women Being Gaslit? presented by broadcaster Katja Mia will explore the challenges women face navigating healthcare, misinformation and the search for answers about their health, as well as drawing on her personal experience of living with endometriosis. Other Virgin Media documentaries to add to your watch list include Deepfake Ireland, following her own experience of becoming the target of an AI-generated pornographic image, Gráinne Seoige explores the disturbing rise of AI-generated abuse and challenges those in power to act now to protect us and our children, and Toxic Threads, in which Brian Dowling Gourounlian explores the realities of online bullying and harassment through the lens of his own experience as the target of online trolling. Health Hysteria: Are Women Being Gaslit? will air on Monday 19 October at 9pm on Virgin Media One.
