The Aran Jumper is a staple in many wardrobes, but did you know these facts about it?

Seen as one of the most popular emblems of Irish fashion and design, the Aran Jumper has been around for decades, yet its origins are largely disregarded.

In a nod to the jumper’s Irish icon status, An Post have launched an Aran Jumper stamp, Designed by illustrator Sally Caulwell. The stamps mark the endurance of the timeless jumper, which exudes history and has helped put Ireland on the map internationally.

Here are some facts about the Aran Jumper that you might not know.

  • The Aran jumper takes its name from the set of islands where it originated many generations ago, off the West coast of Ireland – The Aran Islands.
  • A completed Aran jumper contains approximately 100,000 carefully constructed stitches and can take the knitter up to sixty days to complete.
  • Aran jumpers are water repellent. They can absorb 30% of their weight in water before feeling wet.
  • The jumper has been worn by many famous faces over the years, including Taylor Swift, Chris Evans, Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly.
  • The Aran jumper was passed down from generation to generation and has since become the ultimate symbol of Irish Clan heritage.

There are many Irish brands and designers still creating incredible Aran jumpers and knitwear today including Aran Woolen Mills and Aran Sweater Market.
