A quick and easy 5-step in-flight skincare routine

Keep things simple with this short but effective routine that will keep your skin feeling fresh and hydrated

It’s no secret that flights can wreak havoc on our skin. From recycled cabin air, low humidity, UV rays, and, let’s be honest, a lack of sleep from the stress of getting to that point, you can often start your holiday with skin that feels extra dry and dull.

To help keep your complexion in check, Michelle Ryan, a skin expert and Ultraceuticals’ National Trainer, has a very simple five-step in-flight skincare routine that she swears by to help your skin look refreshed, hydrated and energised when you land in your destination.

1. Cleanse gently

During a flight, you may feel extra oily, dehydrated, sensitive, or prone to the odd blemish. This is where cleansing comes in. I suggest opting for a gentle cleanser which will remove makeup and daily residue while leaving the skin perfectly hydrated. Hot tip: take a reusable make-up remover pad to pat your skin dry gently.

2. Use a mask

If you’re flying for more than a few hours, you might have time to add a mask step. After cleansing, let a thick layer of the mask sit on your face and neck for 5-10 minutes before removing it with warm water. You’ll notice an immediate impact; the skin feels stimulated and looks visibly dewy. Follow with the rest of your routine as usual.

3. Correct your complexion

When flying, I want to target dehydration and the effects of tired, jet-lagged and dull skin. Here’s where serums come in! For hydration, my go-to is the Ultra B² Hydrating Serum. It’s a moisture-enhancing, oil-free serum that provides long-lasting hydration to the skin. Then, I reach for the Ultra C Firming Serum. With two powerful peptides and Pure Vitamin C, it promotes revitalised, brighter and supple-looking skin.

4. Lock in hydration

Locking vital moisture is essential to keeping your skin feeling well-nourished and comforted. During the long haul, you’ll want to reach for a rich, luxurious moisturiser with powerful ingredients, such as Provitamin B5 and Shea Butter, that soothe and nourish the skin.

5. Protect your skin

No matter where you are, it’s always a good idea to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from damaging UVA and UVB radiation.

Bonus: Prevent flyaways

It may not be part of your skincare routine but your hair frames your face so if you’ve done the work on your skin, make sure the overall effect is stunning by keeping your hair in check as well! Award-winning Irish product Smooth Stick is now available on Aer Lingus flights for frizz-free flying and an updo that’s as smooth as your journey when you disembark.
