Goodbye grey! These are the four colours people are turning to for home makeovers

Giving your home a fresh coat of paint can make it feel like a whole new house. These are the colours that are trending this year

When it comes to decorating your living space, personal preference should always take priority over current trends.

That being said, it’s always good (and let’s face it, fun) to see what colours and design trends the interiors industry is loving at any given time. For 2023, there was an increase in colour with more people opting for stronger and more inventive shades of Blue, Green and Pink to brighten up their home. We were also told that, when it came to neutrals, there was going to be a move away from the grey tones that had dominated in previous years and that this year Brown would be a popular choice.

Surprising? Perhaps. But not when you think about the rich palette of shades that come under the umbrella of that one colour: Rust, Oak, Caramel, Cedar, Tawny, Peanut, Cinnamon, Chocolate, Mocha, Walnut, Taupe and plenty more besides.

If you’re still not convinced, colour experts at Colourtrend, Katie Walker and Sheenagh Green, have developed Volume 4 in its Colour Edit series featuring the trending shade of the year – Terracotta. The edit and palette of colours offer contemporary design while maintaining a timeless appeal. It pulls together soft neutrals and statement colours to develop an accessible palette that ties into the leading interior trends.

The colours they’ve used are Brickstock, Arctic Blonde, Powdered Shell, Unveiled and Long Weekend. Click here to see how they might look in your home.

Green

However, if you would prefer to add a more restful colour to your home, the Dulux Colour of the Year 2023 is Wild Wonder – a positive, glowing tone inspired by the natural world.

Working mostly with the popular shades of blue and green, the Irish brand has created four palettes for you to choose from that also incorporate earthy shades of brown and beige. Built around Wild Wonder, the palettes feature Lush colours, Buzz colours, Raw colours and Flow colours and can be found here.

Blue

Whether you’re trying to achieve the ‘Coastal Grandma’ aesthetic, looking to create a ‘Country Cottage’ feel or just love the colour of the ocean, you’ll rarely go wrong with a shade of blue. Depending on the function of the room, it can be create a sense of space, coolness, light and of course, tranquility.

According to paint experts, Farrow and Ball, blue is the colour most widely used in decoration which is testament to its transformative powers. Whether you’re going for dramatic and glamorous or cool and inviting, they’ve got a shade of blue to fit the job.

Pink

If thinking pink in 2023 immediately reminds you of Barbie thanks to the movie phenomenon starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, you could be forgiven. But did you know that the Pantone Colour of 2023 is Viva Magenta? It’s an arresting shade of deep pink ‘vibrating with vim and vigour’.

Fortunately for us, there is a large array of shades under that particular colour canopy and if you’re looking for a more neutral option, we adore this one (pictured) from Fleetwood Paints. Their range of pinks goes all the way from a pale ‘Ballet Slipper’ to a feisty ‘Exuberant Pink’ so you’re bound to find the one that’s right for you.
