Keep track of your local tides with these beautiful Irish clocks

Sea swimming requires a lot of preparation and the last thing many of us think of are the tide times. That’s where this clever creation comes in

Thanks to the glorious heat wave Ireland is experiencing at the moment, it seems like the entire population of our small island is flocking to our local beaches to make the most of the weather.

And, why wouldn’t we? Sea swimming has long been lauded for it’s positive mental and physical health benefits – read our interview with Snámhaí Sásta founder June Curtain here – and it’s a lot easier to do when the sun is shining.

However, something many of us don’t take into consideration is where the tide will be when we arrive. Will it be too far out to swim, or perhaps too far in to lay out a picnic blanket and umbrella? Yes, you can check online – or you can save yourself the hassle and get a Current Clock.

Both a handy device to have in your home and a tribute to the beautiful seaside locations we have, a Current Clock is a tide clock that shows the status of the tide at a glance, with original artwork of coastal locations from around Ireland displayed on the clock face.

Following the success of its launch during Christmas 2022, the company has introduced seven new designs to the Current Collection. Joining the original Forty Foot, Seapoint, and Ripple designs are Sandymount Strand, Bull Wall, Belmullet, Vico Baths, Dunmore East, Portmarnock, and Salthill/Blackrock.

Unlike a regular 12-hour clock, a Current Clock completes its full rotation in 12 hours, 25 minutes and 14 seconds as this is the average amount of time it takes for the tide to come in and out. The high tide is marked on the 12 o’clock position and low tide on the 6 o’clock position. It allows sea swimmers and beach lovers to plan their trips to the coast efficiently and can be set to track any tide in Ireland.

Speaking on the release, Cathal Boyle, co-founder of Current Clock, said: “We hope our tide clocks serve as a daily reminder of the beauty and serenity of the Irish seaside and encourage everyone to take the plunge this summer and experience the amazing benefits of spending more time in and by the sea.”

Current Clocks are now available to pre-order for €65 on currentclock.ie
