Embrace your curls: how to style your hair like our cover star

Louise McSharry has the most fabulous curly locks; her hair stylist on our cover shoot shares how to achieve them yourself

We love to see people embracing their natural features, and our December cover star Louise McSharry is doing just that with her glorious curls.

With curly hair, though, it can be difficult to style. Often, we can use the wrong kind of product, leading to less ringlets, more frizz. We chatted to Nadine Walshe, an award-winning hair stylist who you can book in with at Alan Keville’s Dublin salon.

Hair stylist Nadine Walshe

“I loved working with Louise’s natural texture and started by layering products in her pre-shampooed hair.” Nadine tells us. When it comes to what product she recommends shampooing with, she says to use a sulfate-free option, as it helps with the curl pattern. “My go-to would be the Elements range from Wella Professional and I love Andrew Fitzimon’s Fantasy Curls conditioner.”

She continues: “My top tip for textured hair is to use a leave-in conditioner and a small amount of oil to contain the moisture within the curl, which allows for more defined texture and less frizz. My oil of choice is the Dark Oil by Sebastian Professional.”

Louise’s hair is simply dreamy.

Nadine says to dry Louise’s hair, she used a diffuser; opt for an attachment like this one by ghd for the same effect. These are designed to imitate a natural “air-dry” effect, but in a more controlled, frizz-free manner. “When dry,  I used a small tongs and hand picked random sections to curl in different directions, to enhance the volume.”

Just one of Nadine’s recommendations for curly locks

To finish the look, Nadine says, “I teased out the hair a wide toothed comb and set with an amazing texture spray called Après Sexe, also by Andrew Fitzsimons – but I allowed the hair to do most of the work.”

There you have it; go forth and rock your curls over the holidays. To read our interview with Louise, who chats everything from taking control of her career to body image, click here.
