If snowdrops are your thing, then an annual pilgrimage to Co Carlow in February is a must. What began as a one week Snowdrop Festival now runs right through the month of February. There’s talks from leading gardeners and snowdrop specialists, visits to great gardens and best of all the opportunity to buy some special snowdrops for your own garden.

And you can be part of it by entering our great competition to win two nights’ B&B with one evening meal for two in the four-star Seven Oaks Hotel in Carlow town along with a €100 voucher to spend at Altamont Plant Sales.

The Seven Oaks boasts 89 individually designed rooms, wonderful cuisine and a leisure centre with swimming pools for adults and children. Along with a wide range of herbaceous perennials Altamont Plant Sales specialise in snowdrops with dozens of varieties to choose from.

The Snowdrop Gala at Ballykealy House can’t be missed and it takes place on Saturday 5 February. Speakers include Tom Coward from Gravetye Manor and Anne Repnow who will talk about old and new favourites.

After lunch there’s a guided tour of the snowdrop collection at Altamont Gardens. With 150 named varieties it is one of the largest collections in the country.

That evening a specialist plant sale featuring unusual bulbs and spring flowering perennials from a wide range of specialist nurseries will take place at Altamont Plant Sales.

There’s lots more happening and you can check it all out on carlowgardentrail.com or contact Carlow Tourism on 059-9130411. Special accommodation packages are available through February at carlowtourism.com/specialoffers.
