As Irish Country Magazine celebrates a decade in print, Editor Klara Heron takes this milestone moment to share some exciting news

Editor’s Letter

Ten years. The very first issue of this magazine was published in spring 2012, and so we are honoured to be celebrating a decade of Irish Country Magazine. A decade of bringing inspiring ideas, interviews and Irish-made to readers all over the country and beyond.

When the magazine started, it aimed to fill a gap in the then-crowded newsstands. To speak to women who were as interested in fashion and beauty as they were wellbeing and mindfulness, recipes and gardening. Women who wanted to discover products and businesses that were on their doorstep, not just inaccessible labels that would wipe out a pay check. Women who had busy lives taking care of many around them – to give them something positive and welcoming, for a few moments of ‘me time’.

We know many of you have been with us since the beginning. You’ve given the magazine to your friends, sisters and colleagues. And thanks to your loyalty and support, we’re continuing to grow. With 10 years in print, we are also celebrating our biggest readership ever of 121,000.

Do you like what we’ve done with the place? You might notice a few changes around here. We thought after a decade it was time to freshen up our look but worry not – the same writers, contributors and uplifting features are still here. In fact, I’m delighted to welcome one of the very first contributors to the magazine, Maria Moynihan, back to her column on page 22.

What better way to launch a new look than with a brand new face. Alison Oliver has been seemingly plucked from obscurity to be given the lead role in the new Sally Rooney adaptation, Conversations with Friends. With much of the same team that worked on smash hit Normal People, it’s safe to say the Cork star has a bright future, and with her talent, down-to-earth nature and love for her hometown, we couldn’t be happier for her.

Irish Made Awards 2022

I’m also excited to share that the Irish Made Awards are back once again and open for entries. It’s a place for all businesses making products across Ireland to showcase their talent, and trust me, there is serious talent on this small island. All information is on page 36, including details of THREE new categories.

As we grow, we are always finding new ways to do what we love most – to tell stories. The Making Of is a brand new podcast from team Irish Country Magazine. It dives even deeper into the companies making interesting things in Ireland – and the people who create them. Find the first drop of episodes (coming very soon) on irishcountrymagazine.ie/themakingof and everywhere you usually get your podcasts.

Finally, the ongoing war in Ukraine has been dominating headlines and occupying all our minds and hearts. On page 95, find a recipe for Ukrainian honey cake for those in your homes or communities who might like a taste of home. On page 78 Ariana Dunne shares tips on coping when the news is all-consuming.
