Love it or leave it: How to know when to look for a new job

You spend too much time working to justify staying in a role that doesn’t make you happy

Do you love your job? Just like in personal relationships, it’s crucial to keep passion alive in your career.

If you’ve found your eye wandering to ‘Job Opportunity’ posts online or been tempted to reply to random recruitment messages on LinkedIn, it could be a sign that you’re ready for a change.

Breda Dooley from Matrix Recruitment shares advice on how to rekindle the professional spark or determine if it’s time to break up with your boss.

“If you’re feeling unfulfilled, unappreciated, or stuck in a professional rut, it might be time to consider a breakup. If your job is not bringing you joy, it might be time to explore new opportunities,” says Dooley.

However, if you’re on the fence, or can’t quite put a finger on how you feel about your current position, Breda offers advice on how to rediscover the love for your job:

Reflect on your goals

Take a moment to revisit your career goals. Are you on the right path? If not, consider what changes you can make to align your job with your aspirations.

Communicate with your manager

Don’t be afraid to have an open and honest conversation with your superior. Share your concerns, express your ambitions, and work together to find solutions that can bring back the excitement.

Learn something new

Inject some variety into your daily routine by acquiring new skills. Attend workshops and training courses or explore certifications that can add value to your role.

Find a mentor

Seek guidance from a mentor within or outside your organisation. A fresh perspective can provide valuable insights, helping you rediscover the love you have for your role or career.

Explore internal opportunities

Don’t always assume the grass is always greener outside your company. Check out internal opportunities within your organisation that align with your interests and skills. Perhaps a new role is all you need to inject some new energy into your professional career.

Balance work and life

Sometimes, a better work-life balance is all you need. Ensure you’re taking care of your wellbeing and making time for activities you love outside of work.

“Your career should not only provide you with financial stability but also bring you happiness and a sense of fulfilment,” Breda concluded.

“If you find yourself questioning whether you’re truly happy in your current job, it’s crucial to take the time for introspection. By pursuing work that brings you genuine happiness, you can build a fulfilling and rewarding career journey.”
