Walk and talk: hit the road with these walking groups

Getting out for a walk and talking through a problem can be hugely beneficial for your mental health

The last few years have showed us how important it is to get out for a walk where you can. For a while, after all, it was all we could do. Mentally, there are benefits to taking a walk regularly, and it’s better still to take a friend with you to talk through any issues you might have. According to WebMD, “walking helps boost your mood because it increases blood flow and blood circulation to the brain and body. When you exercise by walking, you calm your nerves, which can make you feel less stressed.”

Around the country, there are some groups to facilitate exactly that: walking and talking to keep your mental health at its strongest.

The Just Us Walking Club meets weekly to explore different routes around Dublin. They organise regular walks around the county to boost physical and mental health for all members. The group meets weekly, and walks are suitable for all fitness levels, so whether you’re a regular walker or just used to a stroll, you can come along.

P.S. if you’re looking for a cosier alternative, the same group have a book club, too.

Sometimes, the mental health conversation excludes the male demographic, which is something many groups have been striving to change. Dudes and Dogs is a more recent addition to Cork, and comprises of a dog walking group for men to walk and talk. Dogs are optional, and if you’d like to borrow the neighbour’s pup for a stroll, that’s ok too! Walks take place at 10am in the city centre every Sunday. Sign up to the next walk here.

The Hike Life

Many will already be familiar with Roz Purcell’s hike group, which meets regularly to take on some of the country’s most stunning trails. There are regular hikes with groups of people from all over the country, and even a dedicated singles hike. Keep up with the schedule over on their Instagram to see when they’re setting off next. And even if you’re not looking for a community, you can find new trails to add to your list.
