The Irish women’s rowing team are bringing home the bronze
Congratulations are in order for the women on the Irish rowing team, as they won bronze medals in the Tokyo Olympics. Despite windy conditions and a steady fifth place position, the team pulled ahead to finish in third. The incredible performance marks Ireland’s first win in this year’s Olympics, and the first time Irish female rowers have come back with medals.
The team is made up of athletes Aifric Keogh, Eimear Lambe, Fiona Murtagh, and Emily Hegarty. Keogh told RTÉ that they knew they could win a medal, and that it was just about pulling it off. “We knew every crew in the boat was also capable of winning a medal and it was just about who got down the course as well as they could in position. It was a bit touch and go.”
Australia took home silver, with the Netherlands going for gold. The team brought home our nation’s 33rdOlympic medal, will we see another? With 12 days of competition left, there is loads to play for.
