From home interiors to comedy and dystopian workplaces, this telly roundup has everything you need for a great night in
Home of the Year – RTÉ One
“I’m currently loving Home of the Year on RTÉ, the new judge Siobhan Lam is a breath of fresh air and the homes so far are giving me a lot of ideas for my own house updates.” – Klara, Editor
Running Point – Netflix
“I wasn’t sure about this when I started it but after just three episodes, I was in. Running Point is Kate Hudson’s first time leading a TV series and she is just as charming and watchable as she is in her movies. The story follows Isla Gordon (Hudson) who is chosen to be president of the family business – namely, The LA Waves basketball team – after one too many scandals. With a great cast including Max Greenfield and Justin Theroux, a fast-moving script and plenty of comedy, I think this is a show that could run for several seasons. Also, the half-hour episodes are perfect if you’re looking for something fun to watch before bed after a long day!” – Claire, Digital Journalist
Severance – Apple TV+
“I am currently on a mission to convince every single person I know to stop what they’re doing and to start watching Severance, immediately. Mainly, it is from a selfish perspective, as I’ve already exhausted all the Reddit discussion threads and need people to pour over it with, but really it is in their best interests: this Apple series is the best telly I’ve watched in a while, maybe ever. It follows a team of office workers whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives, who start to question what’s really going on in their office (spoiler alert: it’s something weird). It starts slow, but please – trust the process. Before long you’ll be referring to yourself in work as an ‘innie’ and religiously tuning into the weekly deep-dive podcast with Ben Stiller and Adam Scott.” – Niamh, Deputy Editor
Zero Day – Netflix
“Zero Day stars Robert De Niro as a former US president locked in a race against time to find the perpetrators of a devastating cyberattack. Avoiding cliche, the female characters are multi-layered, and I liked how the former First Lady exerts influence over her husband in a novel way. Overall, it’s an exciting political thriller that will keep you guessing to the end.” – Ciara, Art Director
Somebody Somewhere – NOW TV
“I heard this show recommended on a podcast that I love but I’m not sure I would have found it otherwise. It’s a hard one to describe – it’s slow-paced and sad at times but also deeply funny and very relatable. Set in Manhattan, Kansas, the series follows Sam (Bridget Everett) as she returns to her hometown and navigates life after the death of her sister. Despite feeling like she’ll never fit in, she finds a group of like-minded people who become a second family to her. The final episode aired last December so the whole series is there in its entirety for you to watch now. Enjoy!” – Claire, Digital Journalist
Meanwhile, two members of our team are re-watching two very different classic series….
Mad Men – Netflix
“I am re-watching Mad Men. I do love to revisit a great series every now and then and it has been so long since I have watched this that I have actually forgotten a lot of the plot. But I just adore the style for both the men and the women and how much the costume plays a role in the story telling. The wives of the men in the advertising agency are all so glamorous and put together. Whereas the multiple mistresses or independent women that feature throughout are a lot more fluid and free in what they wear. The control and the power of these mad men is all reflected in their structured suits and the expectation for their wives to look a certain way. It’s so fascinating to me. I also love how the clothing changes throughout the eras and becomes a lot more colourful and print heavy in the 60’s.” – Megan, Journalist
Modern Family – Disney+
“Sometimes we just need a right good chuckle at the end of the day. Sure true crime, adventure thrillers, and hard hitting dramas are entertaining and all but when the world gets on top of you sometimes a tried and tested comedy is just what you need before easing off to sleep. That’s why my boyfriend and I have started rewatching old episodes of Modern Family. The madcap adventures of the Pritchard, Dunphy and Tucker families never fails to put a smile on our faces as we guffaw at the mockumentary style sitcom. And with twelve seasons and 22 episodes per season there is plenty of laughter to be had.” – Ariana, Sales Manager
