As part of an ongoing series, we’re meeting women from all walks of life who prove how beauty shines from within
Berenice Beukes (57) is a chef based in County Sligo. Originally from Cape Town, when she’s not in the kitchen she loves to keep active with hobbies such as dancing, boxing and life modelling.
On the day of her photoshoot, Berenice visited the Clarins Boutique and Spa for a makeover, and shared her story with us. Her energy was infectious and her joie de vivre clear to see.
Which part of your beauty regime is non-negotiable for you?
I never go to bed without washing my face, brushing and flossing my teeth and applying a night cream, especially now that I’m a bit older.
What was the first cosmetic item you ever bought?
It would have been Dawn body lotion – I didn’t wear makeup until I was in my mid-twenties.

Tell us about a time you felt your most beautiful?
This is a tough question! I feel more beautiful now that I understand myself better and have more confidence. Age has definitely played a big role in how I perceive myself.
How has your outlook changed as you’ve gotten older?
When we’re young, we’re ‘invincible’ or at least we think we are. I became a mother at the age of 28 and suddenly life was more than just having a great time. I always loved being me, but after my 50th birthday I realised that I am so much more than just a mother. I was a single mother of three, then I adopted a dog, stopped watching TV and changed the way I lived my daily life. What I noticed in a number of people of 50 plus, was that they became complacent and I didn’t want that for myself. I had so much more to give and that spurred me on to explore life. I changed my career from an office job to hospitality, and I tried different hobbies and interests.
Can you tell us a bit more about these?
I honestly believe that having diverse interests has the benefit of keeping us young and active. I started life modelling after my 50th birthday; I’m very proud of my body and have no problem modelling it. I started dancing to cope with personal problems. I found going out dancing and developing my own style was one of the most rewarding therapies, without costing an arm and a leg.
In 2018, I came across an amazing exercise called ‘jumping’ – oh, how rewarding that was! A few years ago I started sea swimming and that has been a core part of my exercise. I swim all year round without a wetsuit. And last year, I started boxing. I never realised my own strength – it is a confidence booster and something I recommend. I’ll be 58 in May, I feel good and I’m enjoying life!

As a chef, food must be a key part of your life?
I love food. Good food, that is; I have never dieted in my life. Food is medicine and once we learn to listen to our bodies and have the right relationship with food we do not have to be dependent on artificial comforts. I’m lucky enough to work at a good restaurant that serves lovely food with an amazing view. If you’re in Sligo, try The Driftwood.
