Searches for the look exploded following Pat McGrath’s Maison Margiela runway look in Paris

For years, ‘clear skin’ was the ultimate goal when it came to the products we applied to our faces on a daily basis. However, a new skin trend is taking that look one step further by achieving a look called ‘glass skin’.

If you’ve never heard of it, ‘glass skin’ is a Korean beauty term synonymous with a dewy and reflective appearance, which has now caught on globally. Such is the desire to get the flawless look, searches for ‘Glass skin products’ have skyrocketed by 202% globally in the past five years. The hashtag #glassskin is also trending on social media and has accumulated 3.9 billion views on TikTok alone worldwide.

A spokesperson for beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha commented on the findings:

“The ‘glass skin’ aesthetic is here to stay and is gaining more and more popularity due to it being incorporated into the viral ‘clean girl’ look. With celebrities and runway fashion joining in on the ‘glass skin’ trend, fans are also feeling influenced to achieve the look.”

How to get the ‘glass skin’ look

Having glowy skin is all about getting your skin to its healthiest. However, health does take time, so being diligent with your skincare routine is important.

  • Look into including a double cleanser, using micellar water or oil-based cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen, followed by a hydrating face wash to ensure your face is fully clean.
  • Exfoliate to remove dead skin cells that can clog up pores, but don’t overdo this. Stick to two or three times a week.
  • Use a toner to help reset the pH of the skin; it will help the following steps in your skincare to absorb better into the skin.
  • Incorporate a lightweight serum that’s high in antioxidants which will protect the skin from free radicals.
  • Layer on the moisturiser to leave your skin looking smooth and glowing.
  • Always use sunscreen in your skin routine to protect your skin and keep it at its healthiest.

If you are on a budget, there are some tips for achieving the glass skin look naturally without breaking the bank:

Eat more healthy fat

Upping healthy fats in your diet can help promote glowy, clear skin. Cold-water fish such as salmon or sardines are the perfect healthy fat due to their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce inflammation, and contain antioxidant vitamin E. Avocados are also beneficial for reducing inflammation as they include oleic acid.

Increase your fruit and veg intake

Eating more fruit and vegetables. Vegetables such as carrots can help keep the skin safe from free radicals and have a high water content, which can flush out toxins and bring out a natural glow on the face. Papaya is good for skin brightening and contains an enzyme papain, which can help eliminate dark spots.

Drink more water

Drinking more water keeps your body hydrated and helps maintain skin elasticity.
