Inishowen is a true haven when it comes to epic coastal walking routes. The Buncrana Shore Path is one to put on your list if you are heading to this part of Donegal. This is a traffic-free walk that follows the shoreline of Loug Swilly between Buncrana and Stragill Strand. You will pass through quiet beaches, old forts and a number of historic sites. The wildlife is incredible and the views will leave you in awe.
Getting there and parking
Shorefront car park, Castle Bridge and Ned’s Point each have map boards and spaces to park.
Routes and accessibility
It is a relatively flat trail on mostly concrete, tarmac and gravel and lasts about two hours.
Bite to eat
Tank & Skinny’s is known for delicious brunch and great coffee in a really funky space with stunning views over Lough Swilly. Owned by two Donegal brothers, the atmosphere here is brilliant and the menu is hearty, particularly their signature chip boxes. The perfect refuel after a nice long coastal walk.
Where to stay
The Inishowen Gateway Hotel is a great spot with views over Lough Swilly. It also has a leisure centre complete with swimming pool, sauna and steam room for some total unwind time, and is within walking distance of Buncrana town, with Lisfannon Beach on your doorstep.
