Winter skin tips to stay fresh and glowing over the cold months

winter skin tips

Winter has officially landed and with the colder weather comes new challenges for our skin to contend with

We’ve all noticed the drop in temperature in the last week – the heavy duvet is out, the fire is on and the thought of going out after 7pm has us reaching for the cosy blanket on the back of the couch.

But as we turn up the heat in our homes and brace the elements outside, it’s important to make the necessary adjustments to protect our skin from becoming dry, dull, and irritated. For sensitive and redness-prone complexions, it is particularly important to protect the skin during these harsh winter months.

Dermatology nurse specialist Selene Daly shares her top tips for helping our skin stay hydrated and clear at this time of year:

1. Moisturise regularly

Use a hydrating moisturiser to moisturise your skin and prevent dryness, which can lead to redness. If you suffer from sensitive skin, look for products that contain ingredients such as glycerine, which gently hydrates and soothes irritated facial skin.

2. Use a gentle cleanser

Avoid harsh cleansers that can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause irritation. Opt for a mild, non-foaming cleanser specifically formulated for sensitive skin.

3. Protect your skin from UV light

The most common trigger for red skin (rosacea) is UV exposure. Protect your skin by using a factor 50 with equivalent UVA protection in order to prevent flares. The Rosalique 3-1 Anti Redness Miracle Formula contains a 5*-rated SPF50, protecting the skin from further aggravation caused by UVA and UVB rays. Continuous protection from harmful light rays will further reduce irritation and skin redness.

4. Avoid hot showers and baths

Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils and worsen redness. Use lukewarm water instead and limit your shower or bath time to prevent excessive drying.

5. Limit exposure to irritants

Avoid using products that contain alcohol, fragrances, or other potential irritants. These can further aggravate redness and sensitivity. Instead, choose products that are labelled as hypoallergenic or specifically formulated for sensitive skin.
