The best books to curl up with, and the ones to put on your radar in January

A winter read in front of the fire is quite possibly one of the best feelings in the world. Here are our recommendations for the holidays

When the dinner has been eaten, the relatives have left and the pyjamas are back on, there is nothing like curling up on the coach with a good book at Christmas. Below are four that you can get your hands on right now and two that are set for release at the turn of the year.

The Queen of Dirt Island, Donal Ryan

Award-winning, best-selling author Donal Ryan’s most recent release is a heart-warming story about four generations of Irish women. It explores the love, trials and tribulations that come with family life, as well as loyalty, forgiveness and powerful stories from the women of Nenagh, Tipperary. Available in Easons for €13.99.

Haven, Emma Donoghue

This best-selling historical fiction novel involves three monks and a boat trip down the River Shannon that takes them out to sea. They come across an island totally inhabited by birds and are forced to put their survival skills to the test in order to stay alive. Available from Dubray for €14.99.

Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, Bono

With each of the forty chapters named after a U2 song, Bono’s new book is a memoir that tells the tale of his extraordinary life. Available from Book Station for €23.99.

One’s to keep your eye out for in January

A Small Affair: A Novel, Flora Collins

This mystery thriller follows Vera, a beautiful and ambitious women who recently met an older man on a dating app. Thinking nothing of his previous marriage, Vera soon learns that the man and his ex-wife have been found dead. She is blamed for the crimes and with the scandal still haunting her a year later, she must do whatever she can to earn redemption. It is set to be published on 27 December.

Spare, Prince Harry

This highly-anticipated read is Prince Harry’s memoir, detailing the events and feelings that followed him after his mother’s death. A deeply raw and personal story, this book is set to be published on 10 January 2023.
