The weekend is here, and if you’re looking for something to do, read on
It’s the last weekend of May, which means summer is well and truly setting up camp. If you’re looking to keep busy, here’s a guide to what’s on, and what you won’t want to miss.
New food
Dundrum is already a great place to head on the weekend, whether you’re looking to catch a film, find a new outfit, or stroll around the water-side food court. Now, the shopping centre has added two delicious new food outlets. ProBox is a smoothie and snack bar that uses fresh and natural ingredients. Stop by the new pop-up truck located at Pembroke Square and treat yourself to a smoothie, açai bowl or fresh juice to kick off your day feeling nourished and boosted. For dessert, try Pops. Known exclusively for their luxurious ‘no bake’ dessert submerged in fine chocolate and a range of luxury toppings, they create the ultimate cheesecake pops. Both ProBox and Pops will be in Dundrum through the summer, until the end of August.
Art Attack
You’ve probably seen clips from the Van Gogh exhibition at Dublin’s RDS on your friends’ Instagram stories, as the light show has taken the city by storm. Van Gogh Dublin – An Immersive Journey (not to be confused with a similar event by Fever) is a light and sound show that brings the artist’s work to life. Sit, lie, or stroll as you watch Van Gogh’s journey unfold around you. It’s an immersive show, broken into three parts, and it’s worth noting that the first and last sections are broader than just the Dutch artist. Make sure you catch the paint-by-numbers at the end, that lets the audience recreate a classic painting. There’s also the Infinity Room, where lights and mirrors collide to create an incredible illusion. Van Gogh Dublin will be in situ at Shelbourne Hall until 4 August.
In Sligo, Out of Step takes place at contemporary art centre, The Model. It’s a weekend of music, film, and performance curated by Art for Blind. A weekend pass is on sale for €20 along with tickets to individual events at a cost of €8 for individual entry. The Sunday offering is free of charge but places for the workshop are limited with registration required. The aim of Art for Blinds residency at The Model has been to explore the programming of artists and musicians from diverse social, economic and geographical backgrounds, and this event is the perfect culmination to a cultural exhibit.
Music to my ears
At the Belfast Empire, Springsteen fans will be delighted at the return of Hungry Heart. The club night is dedicated to Bruce Springsteen’s entire back catalogue. It’s a feel-good night out that will have any fan of The Boss dancing the evening away. Tickets are €15 approx. and available here.
In Cork, this week marks the return of Live at the Marquee; a series of semi-outdoor concerts that are the county’s pride every summer. This weekend, The Coronas take to the stage on Friday, with podcast hosts The 2 Johnnies heading up Saturday night. It’s the ideal night if you’ve been ensconced in the ‘GAA Catfish‘ drama from the latter’s latest release. Over the next month, the Marquee will welcome the likes of Tom Grennan, Simply Red, Joanne McNally and much more.
What’s on….our weekend playlist, you ask?
Limerick rapper Denise Chaila, fresh off-stage from her Irish gigs with none other than Ed Sheeran, has released a collaboration with the singer. 2Step (feat. Denise Chaila) will be on repeat all weekend, the ideal soundtrack to the sunny evenings ahead.
