Recipe: Slow cooker ‘Marry Me’ chicken

This is a slow cooker version of the famous recipe so named because, apparently, if you make it for someone, they’ll want to marry you

Is this the dish that launched a thousand proposals?

We can’t say for sure but there’s definitely a reason that the original recipe by Delish went viral on TikTok and The New York Times’ version became its most popular recipe of 2023. It’s just unbelievably tasty.

If you’d like a slow cooker version you can ‘set and forget’ for the day, Nathan Anthony aka. Bored of Lunch, has a fantastic recipe below along with a video you can follow as you prep it at home.

Ingredients:

2 chicken breasts (Feel free to add more)
2 tbsp flour
1 tbsp paprika
Salt & pepper
50g butter
1 tsp thyme and oregano
Fresh basil
100g sundried tomatoes
1-2 tbsp tomato paste or pesto
200ml chicken stock
1 onion finely chopped
1 tbsp garlic
50ml double cream

Method:

  • Start by coating the chicken breasts in a mixture of flour, paprika, salt and pepper.
  • For an extra depth of flavour, brown the seasoned chicken in butter on a hot pan for 1-2 minutes on each side. However, if you’re short on time, feel free to skip this step and add the chicken directly to the slow cooker.
  • Place the chicken breasts in the slow cooker along with all of the ingredients listed (apart from the cream and basil) and let them simmer away for 7-8 hours on low, or 3-4 hours on high.
  • Just before serving, stir in some double cream and fresh basil into the slow cooker for a creamy and aromatic finish. Let it simmer for the last 10 minutes.
  • Serve with a green salad, rice, mashed potatoes or keep it simple with some garlic bread.
