These beautiful walks are great for both your physical and mental health

Dog-owners will know that there is nothing most pups love more than being out in the fresh air and getting as mucky or as wet as possible on a walk!

Whether it’s a beach, a mountain, a field, a park, or just a good sniff around the back garden, it’s vital for your pet’s health that they get out every day to exercise and explore.

With that in mind, pet-care experts at Petmania, have shared their favourite dog-walking routes in Ireland. Exercise is at the top of the list in ensuring a healthier lifestyle as it not only manages the risk of obesity and related disease but improves pet’s mental and behavioural wellbeing.

Champion dog trainer and behavioural expert, Samantha Rawson, says: “Dogs get much of their information from their sense of smell. An exploratory walk where the dog can use its nose can be the equivalent of reading a good book for your dog.

“A walk is also a fantastic opportunity to have some fun with your pet – playing hide and seek can be a great way to tire your dog out mentally as well as physically, and the whole family can get involved!”

Ireland’s Best Dog-Walking Routes

  1. Mount Leinster & Slievebawn, Carlow
  2. Killiney Hill, Dublin
  3. Connemara National Park, Galway
  4. Castle Park & Lacken Walk, Kilkenny
  5. Ballyseedy Woods, Kerry
  6. Abbeyleix Bog Walk, Laois
  7. Lough Gur, Limerick
  8. Westport House Loop, Mayo
  9. Girley Eco Bog Walk, Meath
  10. Kinnitty Castle Loop, Offaly
  11. Kilronan Castle Doon Point Loop, Roscommon
  12. Doorly Park, Sligo
  13. Mahon Falls Walk, Waterford
  14. Raven Point Wood, Wexford

Of course, while exercise is essential to maintaining a pet’s good health and mental stimulation, diet and nutrition are equally important.
