Ariana Dunne takes on a road trip across lakes and waterways in the luxurious confines of the Defender
Driving a Defender across Ireland’s Lakelands is an unforgettable blend of rugged adventure and luxurious comfort. This journey takes you through one of Ireland’s most captivating regions, where ancient landscapes meet glassy, mist-covered lakes and winding country roads. The Defender is a car that makes you feel safe. It’s big and spacious and the warm black and brown tones of the interior make you feel like you are cocooned in and protected from muddy trails and steep hills and just completely enveloped in modern luxury.
Lough Erne is a stunning network of lakes and waterways in the heart of Ireland’s Lakelands, located primarily in Co Fermanagh. It is divided into two main lakes, Upper Lough Erne and Lower Lough Erne, connected by the River Erne. Known for its natural beauty, tranquil waters, and rich history, it is perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape.
Whether you’re traversing rocky paths or crossing damp, moss-covered trails, the Defender’s all-wheel-drive system, adjustable air suspension, and various terrain modes make the drive feel effortless. Despite the rugged landscape, everything remains smooth and composed, something you can’t
often say about narrow country roads.
The addition of Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) technology, which provides 42km of economical electric driving, means you can take in the quiet of the unspoiled landscape in peace and tranquility. The Lakeland region is known for its tricky, unpredictable weather and it rained heavily on our visit, but with the Defender, neither rain nor fog hampered the journey—traction remained solid, and visibility from high up in the driver’s seat is excellent, even in adverse conditions.

Inside, the Defender provides a cocoon of sophistication that’s a far cry from the spartan off-road vehicles of the past. The cabin is adorned with premium materials, from leather upholstery to finely crafted wood accents, making it a cosy retreat on a chilly Irish day. Heated seats and an advanced climate control system keep you comfortable while modern technology, like the intuitive Pivi Pro infotainment system with navigation, keeps you connected and informed about the road ahead.
Ireland’s Lakelands offer some breathtaking scenes that are best experienced from behind the wheel. From the shimmering Lough Erne in Fermanagh to the peaceful shores of Lough Ree, the landscape is brimming with photogenic stops. Each turn reveals another beautiful vista—rolling hills, stone walls, and medieval ruins appear like something out of a dream. The Defender’s elevated stance gives you panoramic views of the surroundings, and you’ll feel compelled to stop frequently to soak it all in.
After a day of exploring, we loved steering the car along the winding driveway that led to Finn Lough, the luxury hideaway known for its domed pods that give you uninterrupted views of the starlit skies. Now as I said the weather was not playing ball that weekend so we were secretly smug that we were booked into their brand-new River Cabins which were so similar in colour and style to the Defender’s interior it was like we at discovered the west wing of the car itself.
Nestled along the water’s edge and designed to blend with the landscape, the cabins provide a retreat that feels refreshingly remote. Large windows and natural finishes bring the outdoors in, making it feel like the lake is part of your stay. As the evening sets in, the cabins invite you to slow down and appreciate the subtle sounds of the river and forest, or, if you’re lucky, a vibrant sunset reflecting off the water.

When it comes to dining, the Barn restaurant is a highlight of the Finn Lough experience. Emphasising local ingredients and Irish flavours, the Barn delivers a well curated menu that celebrates the region’s culinary roots while incorporating a few contemporary twists. The atmosphere is inviting and rustic yet elegant, we savoured creamy burrata, spiced lamb, truffled beef filet steak, and a delectable cheeseboard washed down with a gorgeous bottle of Malbec, before retiring to their nearby bar for evening cocktails.
The next morning we rose early and awaited breakfast to be delivered to our room before embarking on the Finn Lough Elements Trail Spa a truly unique and immersive nature-inspired wellness experience. Nestled in a tranquil lakeside forest, this spa combines stunning natural surroundings with thoughtful, private treatments, creating a perfect escape from the modern world. The spa is designed as a self-guided journey through different
“elements,” blending water, fire, earth, and air to foster a deep connection to nature while delivering luxurious relaxation.
Each stop offers a unique sensory experience; some highlights include a sauna with panoramic views of the forest, a private hot tub nestled in the trees, and a float room filled with soothing warm salt water. Between treatments, guests walk through peaceful woodland paths, experiencing a rare sense of solitude and connection to the natural world.
One of the most notable aspects of the Finn Lough Elements Trail is the emphasis on privacy. Each treatment pod is designed for individuals or small groups only, ensuring a personal and uninterrupted experience. The design is also beautifully integrated into the environment, with large windows, rustic decor, and even open-air elements that maintain a harmonious blend with the surroundings.
Many visitors rave about the meditative quality of the trail. The silence and fresh air, combined with the rhythmic transition from warm to cool environments, creates a journey that is as much about mental refreshment as it is physical. For those seeking deep relaxation, the Elements Trail allows for slow, mindful immersion into nature while providing rejuvenating treatments.
