Irish Country Magazine’s Art Director Laura Merrigan shares ways to get kids inspired with creative projects and imaginative storytelling

There have been some brilliant initiatives online by clever Irish folk to keep kids creative now school is on pause for the next few weeks.

A daily creative brief

Richard Seabrooke, the mind behind Kaleidoscope Festival for families, has started a fabulous and colourful Kaleidoscope Home Club to inspire kids to flex their artistic skills. Fun with storytime

Supremely talented Irish Illustrator and author Oliver Jeffers will be reading one of his books on Instagram Live each weekday at 6pm. He will also discuss some of the things that went into making each book. You can also watch all of his readings on his website. Just like the rest of us, he is stuck inside too, and it is so lovely that he is sharing this walk through his career with the world. We love that he shares jokes from readers in this video below! Afterwards, suggest kids recreate their favourite moments from the book, or make up their own story.

Celebrate iconic women

You can download and colour in your own Boss Lady thanks to design duo Jill&Gill.

Craft a castle

The Dromoland Castle team worked with Limerick artist Una Heaton to give arts and crafts lessons on the hotel’s YouTube channel. The first lesson, available now, is a tutorial on how to construct an easy-to-make castle using materials from around the house. For further information on Dromoland Castle, a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts, visit www.dromoland.ie.
