How to create a garden that lasts

How to create a garden that lasts

How to create a garden that not only feels like a dream come true, but that lasts the test of time, Leonie Cornelius shares her insights.

What truly makes a garden unforgettable? For me, it’s never just about what you see – it’s about what you feel. But here’s a question I’m often asked: how do you ensure that feeling, that dream, lasts season after season?

That question goes straight to the heart of garden design. Because a lasting garden takes more than imagination. It’s not simply about what looks beautiful in the moment – it’s about what will thrive through the seasons, in your soil and within the subtle realities of your space. It’s about envisioning something unique, and then giving it the freedom to evolve in tune with nature.

In this special collaboration with Tirlán CountryLife, we explore how design and horticulture come together to create gardens that don’t just start strong, but continue to flourish. So, what’s the secret?

The beauty of balance

Design is where the spark begins. It’s where you imagine how your garden might look and feel and how it becomes personal, joyful and uniquely yours.

But even the most beautiful concept won’t last if it doesn’t suit the land it grows from. I’ve seen the most beautiful gardens fail – not because the ideas weren’t good, but because the plants were simply in the wrong place or planted in the wrong soil.

That’s why truly great gardens are always a partnership between dream and detail – between what we imagine and what nature requires.

To do this well, we first create a strong design vision. Then we flesh it out by fully understanding the site: the soil, the microclimate and the importance of right plant, right place.

1. Your planting design vision – what’s your style? This stage is all about understanding how you want to experience your garden. Most of us instinctively know what we’re drawn to. What are the first plants you picture when you think of your favourite flowers? What matters to you in terms of colour, texture, movement, or even maintenance? What do you want to see when you look out from your home? What senses would you like to engage as you move through the garden?

Plants tell stories

Chosen carefully, they should draw you out into the garden, not make you think, “Oh no, I need to maintain that again.”

The key is creating a strong design framework around the plants you love, then grouping them in ways that help them succeed together. Think of it like building a happy neighbourhood – each plant bringing its own strength to the whole.

2. Bringing your vision to life. Once the vision is clear, the real work starts – reading the land. I always encourage clients to slow down: walk the space, sit in it, notice how light moves, where shadows fall, where warmth gathers. Understanding soil type, wind patterns, drainage and microclimates is what allows a design concept to truly settle and last.

This is where collaboration with experienced horticulturalists becomes invaluable. The team at Tirlán CountryLife garden centres offer incredible insight into how plants behave over time, which combinations support each other, which plants are resilient and how to ensure a garden looks just as good in year five as it does in year one.

In the end, the secret to a lasting garden lies in balance – between vision and reality, beauty and practicality, instinct and insight.

From the ground up

Insights from Alma Hayden, Horticulturalist at Tirlán CountryLife, Athboy

Alma Hayden

I recently spoke with Alma, who is part of the horticulture team at Tirlán CountryLife’s Athboy garden centre, and her advice perfectly captured how to ensure your planting vision continues to thrive.

Tip 1: Know your soil

“Soil is the unsung hero of any planting scheme. We always encourage gardeners to really get to know it – or even bring in a sample. You’d be amazed what we can tell just from touch.”

Tip 2: Build around shared needs

“Like communities, plants that thrive together usually mirror each other’s requirements. Start with a plant you love, understand what it needs and build the scheme around that. That’s how gardens truly flourish.”

Tip 3: Give plants space to grow

“Spacing is often overlooked. Always consider a plant’s mature size – whether that’s two years for perennials or longer for trees and shrubs. Giving plants room to grow makes all the difference in years two and three and beyond.”

Coming up next…

In the next issue of Irish Country Magazine, Leonie will be meeting with three of Tirlán CountryLife’s leading horticulturalists to explore how planting combinations can echo your design concept while responding beautifully to your space – across seasons and years.

We’re also giving one one lucky reader the chance to win an exclusive garden makeover with Tirlán CountryLife. The competition includes the chance to enjoy a personal consultation with Tirlán CountryLife’s expert horticulturists and €1,000 to spend on plants – to enter, head here.
