A handy guide for a pet-friendly road trip

Bringing your dog on a day trip doesn’t have to be stressful once you have the basics covered

If you’re lucky enough to have a pet that travels well and doesn’t succumb to motion sickness, restlessness or barking at passing cars, it’s a great way to see the country without having to worry about separation anxiety.

According to a recent Petmania Pet Report, 42% of Irish pet owners have already explored Ireland with their furry companions, mostly by car. As well as that, some adventurous canines have even taken to the seas, with 10% traveling by boat!

Whether it’s dreaming of scenic countryside drives or vibrant city escapades, Petmania has provided a simple but effective guide for owners and their pets to enjoy every journey.

Safety first

Before hitting the road, remember that the Irish Road Safety Authority (RSA) advises that all pets must be securely restrained in a vehicle.  To ensure a furry co-pilot’s safety, the RSA recommends harnesses that attach to seatbelts for medium to large dogs, and secure carriers for smaller dogs, cats, and other pets. Remember, loose pets in the car are a hazard – and a pet with its head out the window is at risk of injury or worse.

Pack for a pawsome adventure

Make sure you bring ample pet food, treats, collapsible bowls, and plenty of water to keep pet companions happy and hydrated. A comfortable bed, favourite toys, and a secure harness or carrier will ensure all pets travel in style. Don’t forget waste bags and grooming supplies to keep things tidy.

Pet-friendly accommodation

To make a journey seamless, book pet-friendly accommodation in advance. Many hotels, B&Bs, and vacation rentals offer special amenities for pets. Remember to confirm pet policies and any fees before booking.

Explore the countryside

Ireland’s stunning countryside offers endless opportunities for walks, hikes, and playtime with pets. Discover pet-friendly attractions, gardens, and even pubs that welcome furry patrons. Research dog-friendly cafes and restaurants where all the family – including the furry members – can enjoy a meal together.

Flexibility is key

Most importantly, be flexible and patient. Allow plenty of time for rest stops, bathroom breaks, and playtime for both owner and pet. Travel can be stressful, so be understanding if a pet exhibits signs of anxiety. And remember, never leave a pet alone in a parked car, especially in warm weather.

Petmania is the one-stop shop for all pet travel needs. Visit a local store or browse online for the best selection of pet travel gear and accessories.
