From new Irish dramas to the return of Strictly, here’s what shows to watch on TV this autumn
Need a new series to binge as the nights get longer? Can’t seem to decide on what to watch? No need to worry, below we have a run-down of our autumn favourites. We’ve included Irish dramas, brutally honest documentaries and even some old classics for evenings we’re craving comfort. Autumn is the perfect time to get cosy and enjoy a new show (or five). Here is what we think you’ll love this season.
North Sea Connection
RTÉ has announced that is has over forty hours of brand-new Irish drama lined up for the new season. One series that we cannot wait to watch is North Sea Connection. Set in a traditional and isolated fishing community in Connemara, this contemporary thriller deals with a dark secret hidden in the west of Ireland. Starring Lydia McGuiness, Sinead Cusack, Kerr Logan and Alida Morberg, this series marries the world of traditional rural Ireland with a contemporary dramatic storyline. Count us in.
Strictly Come Dancing
Strictly is back with its largest professional dancer line-up in history. The show is returning to our screens on BBC One on 17 September. Though it has not yet been confirmed which celebrities will be paired with whom, the entire line-up of contestants has been released. Among them are Loose Women presenter Kaye Adams, former X Factor runner-up Fleur East and EastEnders star James Bye – all ready to take on the challenge of exciting themed weeks, including the BBC’s 100th anniversary, movie night and Halloween week.
Brian and Arthur’s Very Modern Family
When Brian Dowling and Arthur Gournounlian announced that they were pregnant, a lot of happy tears were shed. In May, we learned that Brian’s younger sister Aoife would be the couple’s surrogate. In a new RTÉ documentary, the former Big Brother contestant and Dancing with the Stars judge will take us through their emotional pregnancy journey, as well as diving into the issues surrounding surrogacy in Ireland.

Fakes
Netflix has released plenty of new binge-worthy shows this month. One of our favourites is Fakes, a new crime-comedy that sees two girls who have a flair for creating fake ID’s. They accidently build one of the largest fake ID empires in North America. While at first, the girls illegal dealings serves them well, they are soon thrown into the twisted world of crime. Starring Emilija Baranac, Jennifer Tong and Richard Harmon, this new action thriller is available to stream now on Netflix.
Holding
Based on Graham Norton’s best-selling novel of the same name, this Irish drama series will launch on Virgin Media One on 12 September. It stars a stellar Irish cast including Oscar-winner Brenda Fricker, Game of Thrones star Conleth Hill and Derry Girls’ Siobhán McSweeney. A murder-mystery based in a quiet village in West Cork, the series is a charming take on rural Irish communities.
Gilmore Girls
If you’re feeling nostalgic this autumn, re-watching old hits is one our favourite ways to get cosy. An autumn classic that we can’t get enough of is Gilmore Girls. The iconic mother-daughter duo from the nineties make us all want to move to Stars Hollow and drink copious amounts of coffee in Luke’s diner. An easy watch for those days you just need some wholesome comfort, the entire eight seasons is available to stream on Netflix.
