It’s awards season, and Irish talent is getting all kinds of traction

The 94th Academy Awards (also known as The Oscars) gets underway on 27 March, and today the list of nominees was released. And since Ireland is known as a land of storytellers, it comes as little surprise that there are some stellar Irish talents nominated. Historically, Ireland has taken home 14 Oscars, from acting accolades for Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker to film credits for the likes of George Bernard Shaw! Overall, Irish figures have been nominated 96 times.

Kerry native Jessie Buckley was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Lost Daughter. Ciarán Hinds has been tipped in the Best Supporting Actor category for Belfast. The film is a semi-autobiographical family drama by Kenneth Branagh set in the titular city during the Troubles. It’s a moving and uplifting film that has been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Singer Van Morrison’s song from the film has been nominated for Best Song.

Surprisingly, Passing‘s Ruth Negga and Belfast‘s Caitríona Balfe were snubbed, despite nominations for Golden Globes earlier this year. But with much of the season still to unfold, it’s set to be a big one for Ireland’s exports.
