One thing is for certain, you won’t be bored
Last week, restrictions were lifted across the country, which means weekends are wide open with possibility once more. If you’re looking for some weekend inspiration, or trying to make a plan to keep busy for the last few days of January, look no further. Whether you’re a Kilkenny cat lover, or just seeking some musical respite, there’s plenty on in the coming days.
Friday Night Lights
Take a look at the Dreamsphere in Dublin’s Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) with a stunning new immersive installation devised by IMMA artist-in-residence Aoife Dunne. From sculpture and sound to performance and film, everything has been curated by the artist and it’s a sight to behold. The installation will run daily until the end of February, and is best viewed around 4pm. Admission is free but please note there are flashing lights.
Just breathe
In Galway, a production of Breath takes place in the Town Hall Theatre. The show is a music play with multi-instrumentalist Steve Wickham of The Waterboys. He is joined by actor Karl Quinn to playfully explore our pandemic experiences. Think Zoom fails, news overload, and hopeful, bated breath. Tickets cost €20 and are available to book here.
Walk the catwalk
And no, we don’t mean head to Paris. In Kilkenny, the whole family can take part in a walk around the county’s medieval city – with a twist. The Kilkenny Catwalk Art Trail features 21 cat sculptures, decorated by mainly local artists. This trail can be engaged with outdoors and has been designed to bring local businesses, arts and community together. Simply download the ‘Kilkenny Catwalk Trail’ app and go!
Jazzy
When you think of a jazz weekend, you might think Cork – but the traditional jazz event takes place in October. Thankfully, you can get your jazz music fix elsewhere. In Dublin, Big Romance is an ‘audiophile’ bar that has as much love for music as it has for craft drinks. It’s a vibey space that hosts jazz music every Sunday afternoon from the excellently-named Organ Freeman. The music starts at 6pm, and entry is free.
In Waterford, on Sunday 30 January, you can find jazz at the Sunday Series in Christ Church Cathedral (not the Dublin one, mind!) Starting at 12 noon, while away the afternoon to the soothing sounds of FallAway House and singer The Joy of Jazz, with tickets from €12.
