The Irish book in the running for the €100,000 prize is Colum McCann’s Apeirogon, a breathtaking novel inspired by the true story of two men united by loss.

Here is the complete list of nominees:

  • Bernardine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other
  • Valeria Luiselli’s Lost Children Archive
  • Fernanda Melchor’s Hurricane Season
  • Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous
  • Colson Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys
  • Colum McCann’s Apeirogon

The award, now in its 26th year, is presented annually for a novel written in English or translated into English. Books are nominated for the award by invited public libraries in cities throughout the world – making the award unique in its coverage of international fiction. Titles are nominated on the basis of high literary merit as determined by the nominating library.

Both the shortlist and the eventual winner are selected by an international panel of judges which changes each year. This year’s panel includes Irish author Jan Carson, Trinity professor Chris Morash as non-voting chair, poet and author Enda Wyley, academic and poet Dr Martín Veiga, Maynooth University lecturer Dr Rita Sakr and author and translator David James Karashima.

Previous winners include Anna Burns for Milkman and Mike McCormack for Solar Bones. Check out the 2021 longlist here.
