How to improve bumpy skin texture

Here’s what to do if you have spotted some unwanted lumps and bumps when looking at yourself on screen

It can be so frustrating when your skin is free from spots and blemishes, to see that there are visible bumps on the surface of your skin. One would think that going makeup free so much more often would result in soft, touchable skin, but masks can also be adding to the congestion that causes those little bumps to form. And because makeup can draw attention to rather than conceal those bumps, it is something you will have to take action to get rid of. Here are some simple changes you can add to your skincare routine to eradicate those little molehills over time.

Embrace acid cleansers

Not something to be intimidated by, cleansers containing glycolic or salicylic acids help remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, strengthening the skin and improving the texture and radiance of your complexion.

CeraVe SA Smoothening Cleanser, boots.ie (€12.50)
La Roche-Posay Effaclar micro-peeling purifying gel wash, lookfantastic.ie (€22.95)
Sally Cleanse, theskinnerd.com (€25)

Exfoliate with care

You may be tempted to scrub the bumps on your chin, but that may only exacerbate the problem by irritating the skin. Try adding an exfoliating toner into your routine that is gentle enough to use daily, or limit yourself to using a gentle enzyme peel regularly instead to avoid unnecessary friction. Keep an eye out for the phrase alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs, which are derived from organic sugars such as glycolic acid or lactic acid.

Declare Soft Cleansing Enzyme Peel, theskinnerd.com (€33)
Exfoliate Glycolic Acid Toner, pestleandmortar.com (€29)
REN Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic, cloud10beauty.com (€32)

Moisturising matters

Yes, you may be concerned about further clogging pores, but not moisturising enough can leave the skin too dry, causing it to produce excess oils. Aim to keep your skin balanced with a nourishing moisturiser specific to your skincare concerns. Look out for water-based products with niacinamide (vitamin B3) to help calm inflammation and reduce skin congestion.

Olay Regenerist Whip, boots.ie (€44.99)

Don’t skip SPF

Textural changes in the skin is just one way that sun exposure harms the skin. Always aim for broad spectrum formulas with SPF30 or higher.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Cream SPF50, lookfantastic.ie (€19.95)

Add retinol to your routine

Retinols are powerhouse products that contain vitamin A to stimulate collagen production, which will smooth the skin and even pigmentation. You may notice some peeling, but it’s not quite the same true or even exfoliation you would get with something like a glycolic acid.

Skinceuticals Retinol .3% cream, lookfantastic.ie (€64.95)
